 |
|
Section 6.45 of the rules say that "Skirmish formation is retained as long as the unit only moves using wheels or moves straight back in a counter...If a unit in skirmish formation makes any type of turn...or declares a charge, it reverts to a block..."
This wording seems pretty clear that a unit in Skirmish cannot move forward and remain in Skirmish.
But then a few paragraphs later it says "If during a given approach move, a body in skirmish formation cannot reach its own shooting range...it must either move as fast as possible toward the nearest enemy unit or adopt a formation other than skirmish."
This implies that a unit in skirmish can move forward towards an enemy, at least when it is out of range.
So which is it? In any event this wording seems unclear. |

'only using wheels or' in the first excerpt is for moving forward. |

Thanks...so it appears that only chariots (or wagons?) can move forward, and not, say, light cav or light foot? |

No, 'wheels' refers to the act of 'wheeling' permitted to just about anything. |

LOL, doh, hadn't had my coffee this morning I guess!
Sorry if I'm making a big deal out of this minor point, but I just don't understand how this is supposed to work...so a unit could move forward by wheeling, but not straight forward? That seems odd...
And so could it wheel it's right flank forward, and then wheel its left flank forward, thus effectively moving straight forward? |

There's no need to actually wheel...you can just move straight ahead. That's implicit, not actually stated. |

Or if you prefer, think of any forward movement as involving a 0.000000001 degree wheel |
