Ok people, new topic idea:
What is your favorite 1200 point list and why? Feel free to post it as well here for discussion.
1200 points offers a smaller board 3x5 in 15mm and 5x6 in 25mm - less points and often a different configuration. Some armies can't get enough troops in 1200 but some others thrive.
Keep the discussion going.

I don't thnk I have favorite lists...but I do realize the different constraints on 1200 vs. 1600, and the smaller table.
Clearly you want to maximize efficiency. That 235 point CinC on 1600 pts is probably not a great idea on 1200.
On 1200 you begin looking harder at those D class troops, particularly dense shooters, as D class shoot just as well as A class.
Base troops with upgrades get more scrutiny...as you can upgrade a few elements in a unit and leave the rest at cheaper cost.
Of course, we all pay for this thinking when a unit routs in the middle of several D class units!

At 1600 points armies can max out on their best troops and the separation between "A" lists and "B" lists is much greater.
At 1200 points I believe many more armies can be run. That being said they tend to be less well-rounded and can run into matchup problems.
I would say that playing at 1200 points is actually a really fun amount and creates quick games (2.5) hours and a greater variety of armies then we typically see at tournaments.

In 1200 points my favourite army is Carthoginian, 9 elephants - lots of double ar,ed foot and some lights to screen your flanks - It fights hard, with lots of troops and typically games are over fast.
My list is Hannibal in 3 unit elephants 2x 3el units
5 units of sctarii - lmi, htw, jls, sh (one unit with no jls)
2 units of irr LI
3 units of regular spanish lights - and you are done - 8 fighting units 24 scouting - and a blast to run |

I don't have current 1200 versions handy, but I definitely take a different approach to the mini format -- much more fun oriented, less concern about being competitive. At 1200 points you just can't account for everything, and so you have to have one or two tricks you do well and hope for the best.
Armies I frequently play at 1200 points:
* Post Mongol Russian. The gimmick here is an abundance of 18 figure cav units in 2 wide, 3 deep formation that are: 1st rank Irr B HC L,B,Sh, 2nd rank Irr C MC L,B, 3rd rank Irr C MC B. Very cheap, provides the same density of shooting as skirmishing regular loose order foot, but with the mobility and scouting of being all mounted. Also decent light cav, decent light infantry, and a little bit of close order foot for denser shooting. The most shooting you can get on an army with this much mounted, and it quickly goes downhill above 1200 points. Above 1600 points you really start running out of things to buy.
* First Crusade. Buy all the pilgrims. 36 figure units in 2 wide, 6 deep formation that are: 1st rank Irr A LMI JLS,Sh, 2nd rank Irr C LMI JLS, 3rd-6th ranks Irr D LMI IPW. They count as 24 figures on a 2 element frontage, meaning they can absorb casualties better than most barbarian trash. This means they can hang around long enough for the Irr As to have a real chance to roll up. Stiffened with some lancer units in support, covered with some decent LI and a smattering of LC. Go forth and roll up.
* Medieval French. In actuality I play this as if it were Scots Common Army (see Todd's suggestion here), so late period French with all the Scots allies you can get. You use the French LI CB as a weak but cheap screen, you have a mix of French and Scottish knights for punch, with the Scots knights crucially being able to dismount as SHI 2HCW in the front and EHI JLS,Sh in the back -- the much-needed pike killing combo. Then you buy as many Scots Yeoman as you have points for, making them HI in the front, and you rush forward with them seeing what they stick to that the knights can then kill. And besides, you get to play Joan of Arc; the French really don't get more heroic than that. |

I like the burgundian list a lot - it gives a strong army with some punch, no dramatic weaknesses - to me 1200 points takes out some of the army complexity - so you want something that does a task really well in limited time |

I also like Han in this space as you get a lot of good options at reasonable price - some armies are hamstrung at 1200 points - the Chinese are not because HCh have a lot of punch - there are good backup troops and good scouting options |

Actually, the only army that I used at 1200pts was The CID.
Reasonable cheap troops.
However, as Mark remarked. I also have Matt's Mongols in 15mm. I played that in 1200pts.
Masses of bow cav.
Interesting

2 units of Longbow 24 MI LB SH, Stakes
2 units of LI
1 small LC
1 unit of 6 HC Lance

I'm a fan of Hun for mini, but it needs non-preset terrain :-/
I wish I had more time to think of this stuff, but the winter break is coming... |

Non-preset terrain = Not Happening = Oh Well on the Huns
To me, some of this depends on scale. Not having thought about 15mm in forever, I don't have any idea but I could see Huns in that since I probably wouldn't clutter up the table too much.
But in 25mm, I've become a huge fan of Thracians. Remember, 12E barbarian foot blocks, front rank Irr A and *no* 2HCW. I've got the last list I used around here somewhere...
