Frank Gilson and I have debated the merits of Early Burgundian quite a bit. It
seems to be one of those lists that is almost good enough, but not quite there.
Frank prefers to configure the shooting units with front rank LB and back rank
CB, giving you 2 full ranks of shooting out to 120 paces. Yes, CB is a lower
factor against elephants and some foot, but you pick up 2 extra figures of
shooting, which seems a worthwhile tradeoff. I think you ought to run the
shooting blocks in bigger units (8 or 12 stands) and run them as close order.
Taking away the risk of failing a waver test for being charged by mounted helps
a lot. And in bigger blocks, a single unit of elephants may beat you, but may
well not do a CPF.
The problem is you really need better attack foot. The LHI 2HCW,LB guys are the
right idea, but having them as C class makes them just a little too brittle,
and a little too vulnerable. They don't counter away as well, they don't pass
wavers as well as the B class guys you get on the 100YWE list.
Now, Ed Forbes has been experimenting quite a bit with the late period of this
list. There are some negatives to the late period: you have some required organ
guns that don't do much, and you have to have some C class knights; never a good
thing. But it does get you an opportunity to bring a Swiss ally, and those Swiss
pack some real punch in hand-to-hand. The usual Swiss vulnerability to shooting
is somewhat mitigated on this list because you have so many shooters of your
own with which to split fire.
Ed's successes have been mixed. He's definitely had some big wins, and he's
never been in a low-scoring game running EBurgundians. So it plays pretty well
in our current scoring system. But, like I said, it's just not quite there. Not
a list I would put in the top tier.
