Hi,
Listened to all of the discussion on 25mm vs 15mm, and am considering a
possible 25mm army for future. I really like the 'feel' of 15mm, so am curious
about how different 25mm plays. In building an army, I would like to mix
manufacturers and am curious about 25mm figure compatibility. In particular
interested in Ottonians (Pre-Feudal Germans). Anyone have any manufacturer
recommendations/experience?

Yeah, I would also like some info on this. Having monitored all the
discussion on NICT, I have concluded that I want to build a 25mm
Greek army. It might even play nbetter in 25's. Who makes figures
size compatible with Mirliton, who for my money makes the finest
Hoplite/Hellenistic figures I've yet seen in 25's?
BTW, for those of you unfamiliar with the geography, I'm in Corpus
Christi and John's in the Rio Grande valley. That means that
although in the free state of Texas, we are over 140 and over 200
miles SOUTH of SAn Antonio respectively and over 400 miles SOUTH of
Dallas.
Heck, we're 200 miles from each other. So you'll have to forgive
some of my ignorance. For years, I only got to play once a year...
at Historicon. Plenty of time to paint though. Soon the reindeer
brigade I'm painting for my son for Christmas will be ready. Found
some odd 15mm antelope by chance at Historicon. I agree it would be
nice if we had more time to shop.

Bill,
A few years back I purchased some very nice 1st Corps 25mm Greek Hoplites.
I'm very satisfied with them as compatable with Foundry which is undoubtedly the
best in 25/28mm lead!

Yep, actually its 248 miles from my house to Flamingo Basin. Bill is right
next door - only 140 miles Travel is always gonna be an issue from the Rio
Grande Valley.
Back to figures; I like Bill's Greeks. Does Mirliton make other lines? Are
they on the web? I am looking at Early Germans (Pre-Feudal), even though
there are a lot of unmanly non-pedestrians:-) Do infantry types tend to play
better in 25mm? I guess there is less maneuver room, so contact and critical
action comes quicker. I too am interested in going to Historicon this year if
possible. If nothing else like to check out the opportunities to spend my kids
toy money in the dealer area!

This is a good point and one we forget in DFW at times. My nearest opponent
lives 4 houses down from me. He walks his army over to my house! My next
nearest is 8 miles away. If I go out to 40 miles I have more like 10, plus
Lone Star Comics. Sometimes I take for granted how close my gaming buds
are.

Johnny,
Go to www.miniwars.com and check out Dave Smith's Teutonic army in 15mm.
The mounted figures are all Mirliton. I think much of the foot is Gladiator.
Check out his site, it will give you a very good indication for the quality of
the knights!

Jon's a good 150 miles from me.

And that would make me 105 miles from you! I really miss having you come to my
house and kicking my butt. Oh well, those were the days. . .

>John, go into the yahoogroup site for this group and search thru the back
emails. Try feudal or medieval or something. We've discussed various figure
manufacturers before for feudal lists but I'm not the best one to talk what
works best with what since my 25mm armies are overwhelmingly Irregular and it's
not everybody's favorite figure line. If you dip figures, it's one of the best
lines to use because it's full of crevices.
>How different does it play? Man, this is a tough one to verbalize. Obviously
given the "standard" table size, the troop to space ratio in both scales means
different armies *can* play better in one scale vs another. 25mm are simply
taking up more room on the table than in 15mm so sweeping maneuvers are less
likely to occur. Of course troop support is sometimes easier because you're
guys are simply closer together. The reverse bad thing on this is equally true,
waver tests. You always seem to have more folks within 120p of a routing unit
in 25mm than you do in 15mm.
>A common perception is that close order foot armies are more "viable" in 25mm
than in 15mm, presumably because they can get into action "faster" (see above on
troop to table size ratio). While that is theoretically true, I seldom see it
in reality. Missile fire takes on greater importance in 25mm, again because of
how much room you cover. Artillery is almost never a viable option in 15mm
(unless you're stinkin roman bolt shooters on carts). However, in 25mm, it can
be something important. And of course all the missile-armed foot troops can't
be avoided as easily. I think this is one reason why we saw more of these type
armies at the NICT this year. The assumption was everybody would bring knights
and elephants and what armies do well in a one-list tourney against those types
of armies? Missile armies. In 15mm, you'd see an entirely different dynamic at
work.
>I find that there are less geometry issues in general 25mm games than in 15mm
but I also realize that if you're stepping things up a notch, like in the NICT,
that characteristic difference disappears, ie, both games play the same.
