First, a comment that leads me to the question-

The example of a flank charge on p.42 was a bit unclear to me, due to
my ingrained "DBM-think" where there is a often an important
distinction in the results of making contact only on a corner vs edge
to edge.

I will assume that bodies W,X,Y,Z have an allowable movement of 140p
in your example. [ Which is strange, since no troop type has that
movement. 160p might have been a better exempler distance. ]

Body X initially contacts A only corner to corner, and uses all its
movement to do so. But the first paragraph in _Pivoting to Conform_
says that X will make a "free" pivot to conform the edges. Thus it
is the free pivot which makes the flank attack happen. The amount of
extra movement is in this case large, and critically significant.
The free pivot is a significant difference from the DBM way of doing
things.

*****
question WRT the example Making Contact on p.41:

Suppose X made contact on the corner of A exactly at the center of X
(ie on the inner corners of the two elements). Would the player then
have the option of pivoting into contact with his choice of the front
or flank of A? The rules do not require the pivot to be in the
direction which requires the least amount of movement to achieve
edge-to-edge contact.

No. If you don't contact with all your front elements behind the enemy
flank, you pivot and line up against his front.
6.165, paragraph labeled Flank Charges, second sentence.
