While looking something up I have noticed that these bullet items
could be de-Barkerized. The phrases "over one contiguous rank" and
"from behind one such rank" make me think twice to figure out what is
meant.

Just say straight out -- "they my fire from the second rank... " &
"...if the first rank is armed the same."

I was looking up the proper method for counting half of rear ranks.
The wording in 8.4 is pretty clear to me that you count all rear rank
figs then divide by two.

But I swear that in some previous posts by people doing the numbers,
sometimes they counted half of each rank & rounded up (=2/rank) and
then summed the rank values. But it was chariots, and its
complicated by crewman "counting as" more than one before being
halved...
