Heh, yeah - I'm gonna bail on that lame idea of mine in trying to use the
9mm warmaster minis...

Feudal English, Viking, Irish/Norse are what immediately comes to mind,
unfortunately - since I'm no history buff by any epic stretch of the
imagination - it's a bit difficult to decide.

This is extremely helpful! I'm definitely going to buy my initial two
armies there!

Ok, after flipping around the FW lists and some googling, here's my first
attempt at choosing two armies - I'd love to get suggestions/opinions from
anyone. Which of these matchups might be more suitable for first time
players? Which would be more fun initialy? How about balance? ( I'd like this
matchup to be fairly even, with ideally plenty of variance in tactics, so
that things don't get too static feeling while we're learning. )

anglo-norman (196) vs norman conquest welsh (145)

or

viking (139) vs norse-irish (146)

or

late welsh (199) vs feudal english (201)

Thanks for the help everyone!

Cheers,

Corey

Good Afternoon Corey ...

My advice to you would be to pick an army that has some sort of the
following stuff;

Heavy Horse
Light Horse
Heavy, Combat Foot
Terrain Troops (LHI/LMI)
Light Foot

Consider buying some irregulars and some regulars.

My reason, is that you will get a good feel for how all the basic
backbone type troops will work, and better still, work together. By
taking both irregulars and regulars, you can see the various
advantages of each.

These armies have a tough learning curve to master, but if you get
proficient with it, you can feel confident that you have a nice
understanding of the game.

If you would like some advice offline, please feel free to email.

Ok - well, after much perusal of the FW lists, I've decided to go with Norman
Conquest Welsh vs. Anglo-Norman for the intitial armies that I learn to play
Warrior with. It was difficult to find two armies that contained a selection
of the units Greg suggested, so I went with the closest I could find that also
seemed interesting to me.

I'm gonna order the FW pack mini's from http://www.speartorifle.com/, as Scott
McCoppin suggested - thanks!

It'll cost me about $100 for both:

Anyone have any idea as to the quality of these? They're Essex 15mm.

Beers!

Actualy - just a quick followup, before I go and make the final decision and
purchase:

If you could suggest the "perfect" two armies to use as means to learn Warrior -
what would they be?

They need to be Opponents, from the FW list, preferably "fun", or "interesting",
and even better if there's lots of info available on them and/or a particular
period/campaign that I could use for research and a general setting/backdrop
during play. Remember, I'll be painting both armies... (sheesh) - and I
currently have extremely limited knowledge concerning historical warfare ( and
history in general! <grin> ); I have a tendency to prefer dark ages and feudal.

Thanks for any help or insight/suggestions you can provide!

Corey, I can only speak for myself, but when working on a 15mm ancients army, I
always start with Essex and have several Essex armies. There are other
manufacturers with niche lines who make better figs in that line, but I like
Essex for overall quality in 15mm.

Well, I certainly make no claims to perfect whatsoever. But when we went
through all the historical pairs to decide which two armies would be included
(in cardboard color elements that could be used immediately upon purchase) with
Warrior Battles, we settled on Early Imperial Roman and Early German.

One's regular and one is irreg.
They are the armies from 'Gladiator'
The Fast Warrior versions do not include any 'funny stuff' (chariots, elephants,
artillery, camels).

It isn't a perfect choice (no archers, no LC...) but it was the best of the 30
'well-known' pairs we looked at.
