Hi,
Here's an AAR from my two wheelin' expedition to Bayou Wars last weekend.
Below is the list I used. I welcome any comments or suggestions. I kept units

I have four commands because I like to flank march one on a pretty frequent
basis, although I didn't actually try that this weekend.
Game 1 vs Roger Walker and Blemye
There was a major water on the left along with a large wood in the center
front of my deployment area. There was also a brush in Roger's rear area on the
right.
I deployed Command II and Command III on right, one behind other and Command
IV and Command 1 on left one behind other. I also force march the three small
LI units to center line and flank marched on the right with the 4E LC L unit.
Roger had large LI B units backed by LI JLS Sh across the front with LC/LCm
on flank to my right and tandem units of HC/MCm at points near center.
Roger's massive LI screen drove off my LI pitiful attempt to fix him. I
attempted to bring my large 2E HCh with rear rank 2E LCh into action on the
right,
but they never really engaged until end. The real key was in the center when
4E HC L CB took on one of his tandems. Despite disorder, I was able to
throw down on MCm and cause some wavers in center and to right which finally
allowed chariots to get into action. Meanwhile on left and right, all of my
fighting generals managed to get into action. I had a LCh unit detachment
break,
but was able to break up infantry and LC which caused wavers on his LMI in
brush. It then became a cascading effect. Roger never really rolled up with
his
Irr As, and I pretty much stayed between +1 and -1 throughout game. I like to
have lots of commands and was rather intrigued by his use of only one command.
The only real rules question to come up in this game concerned attempting to
break through a unit from side to side with chariots. Based on our reading
of rules, decided not possible ;-(
Game 2 vs Elric Walker and Late Samurai
There was a hill on my left and right, along with two woods pretty much
clogging up his right flank. There was also a brush in Elric's center. This is
probably the game I was most looking forward to since I am also working on a
samurai army and I wanted to see Elric's organization and how they fought. I
did
have a lot of trepidation about facing his Samurai.
I deployed, from left to right, Command II, Command IV, and Command III on
line with Command I deployed behind Command IV in the center. Once again I
force marched the three small LI units to the center. Since I thought I was
gonna get pushed back by the large Samurai units, I also deployed an IA 6E unit
of
tribesmen in ambush in the woods on the right. Once again, I flank marched
the 4E LC L unit since I didn't figure they be too useful in this slugfest. I
am still working on deployment plans, but I am trying to do more with
deploying commands behind one another. Elric had some of his Samurai get
smacked on
the flank in his previous game against Late Imperial Romans, so he tried to
stay pretty much on line throughout the game. He kept a LI unit in the brush to
connect his main line of Samurai (I believe there were either 6 or 7 6E units
with front rank Samurai and back rank Ashigaru). They all seemed to have had
morale of Irr B. He also had two mounted 4E Samurai units which attacked in
both flank sectors as well as his 2E (?) generals.
My LI continued marching forward and pretty much kept Elric from pushing to
far beyond his deployment area. He rapidly shot the snot out of them while my
main forces came up. My ambush finally gave up and joined us since he
remained on defensive on the right. I kept my infantry back since I knew he'd
demolish them. LC went in and cleaned the LI he had in the brush out while my
big
chariot unit smacked into a large samurai unit on the left. He pretty much
passed his wavers for the charge, but I managed to push him back and waver and
shake him. This opened a flank on an adjacent Samurai unit which I hit and
broke. Meanwhile, I tried sending a LC unit into a Samurai unit that had just
dismounted. I hopped to cause a waver so they'd be shaken since they were at
table edge, disordered, and I had 2inC and his big chariot unit lurking nearby.
Samurai were way too tough for me and made sausage of LC. 2inC watched the
whole thing and was shaken up on the play as well. Luckily for me, Elric was
still cautious about his flanks and 2inC got time to sit there and get his act
back together while I continued to push in the center. Meanwhile my flank
march arrive right next to his camp. I hesitated a bit (I've never actually
reached a camp before so they were a little taken aback) so his CinC came over
and
drove me off. The breaking of two samurai in center along with LI and some
shaken allowed Han to win having only had LC broken. Interesting situation to
ponder came up when mounted Samurai marched through woods and dismounted at
edge of woods. We were trying to figure out how the disorder worked in that
situation. Figure disorder over at end of turn since LEHI not disordered in
woods
once off horses and dismount disorder ended at end of turn.
This was a really fun game and Elric's figures were awesome. He had a great
head's viewing ceremony going on back at his camp!
Game 3 vs Ted Greenspan and Hohenstaufen Sicilian
There was a major water feature on my right with two woods on left and right
just short of the center line.
I deployed Command IV in front of Command II on the left and Command III in
front of Command I on the right. Once again I force marched the three small LI
units to the center. Since there was a corridor on left between water and
woods, I also deployed an IA 6E unit of tribesmen in ambush in the woods on the
left. Once again, I flank marched the 4E LC L. Ted deployed a screen of LI
with his knights and Moogs behind them. Ted basically kept his small (2E)
Moogs butted up against his 2E knight units These were massed towards the
center.
These game was quick and brutal. I tried to drive off an LI unit with my LC
so I could get at his big guys. The LI stood, passed the waver and held up my
LC. Ted then charged through his own LI with the Moogs and ate my LC's
lunch. I was now on the receiving end of a series of cascading wavers. My love
for D class troops was once again rewarded and the whole of Command IV decided
to go home. Their retreat allowed Ted to send his knights in flank of my
chariots and we were toast. It was a slaughter. The only issue in this one
concerned expansion as a followup. Ted had an LI unit which couldn't recoil due
to
unit behind them. Since I couldn't move forward, we assumed my LC couldn't
expand. Didn't matter next bound since they then led Command IV to the rear!
All in all Bayou Wars was a blast again. I really enjoyed my games and I'm
looking forward to it again next year!
