Recently a flurry of discussion on the ancmed discussion group has
centered on Ancient Battle Command. The gist of the discussion is
that DBM/DBA/Warhammer ancients do not adequately address this issue
and over simplify the important dynamic of Battle Commnand. The
discussion caused me to look at the Warrior Rules and I think the
Warrior Rules have truly captured the essence of ancient battle
command. The specific actions in the orders to commands give the
right amount of restriction/flexibility and the rules governing
changing those orders are limiting enough to make it a headache.
Don't change a thing.
But while reading the rules again I noticed something that could be
better written and should eliminate confusion. Under 4.22 there are
two seemingly contradictory statements. The first is in the fourth
sentence it states, "Tactical orders can be changed by communication
between the CINC and a command's general, then if accepted, between
the latter and each of his units." Then a few sentences later it
says, "Orders are given to whole commands not to individual units,..."
I had to read this several times. I have allways played that orders
are given to subordinate commanders and then once received the orders
for that entire command are changed. This matches with the second
statement, "Orders are given to whole commands not individual
units,...". But the first statement made me think that possibly
someone might see the need to have his sub-general then communicate
the order to each body in his command. I think if you simply
eliminate "then if accepted, between the latter and each of his
units." it should clear this up.

Yes, Tom, this needs some cleaned up language. As soon as my world stops
moving... :)
