If the World, Galaxy, Universe, 1600 Point Championships in 15mm &
25mm were held tomorrow, and first prize in each scale was a hot date
with Linsey Lohan ... and you can play any army you want ... what
would you pick in each scale, and why?

Thanks ... g

P.S. For those thinking this is a meaningless post, you are quite
correct ... but it was either this, another Chinese vs. Roman
infantry thing, or "Pimp my Neo-Babylonians."

Sea People - What more do you need than her and a table of Sea Men.
And it would for sure be in the larger scale.

I REALLY hope this isn't leading to what I'm thinking it's leading too. . . :)

I don't think its leading to anything, other than selecting two
armies.

I guess I should have gone with "Pimp my Neo-Babylonians" instead. ;-)

I would use Timurid, but I am sure that if I won I would have to
donate the date with Lohan to someone else. I feel my wife would
object.

Well, I have no idea who Linsey Lohan is. And I think my views on this matter
are pretty well known. But, for the record:

Same army in either scale, my top pick would be Later Paleologan Byzantines.

First, I can claim strong historical interest in this period, backed up by the
fact that I even played this army in tournaments when it was Theodoran
Byzantine under WRG 7.0, complete with non-wedging knights (except for 6 Reg C
Germans), and required 24 figures of Reg A HI 2HCW,Sh Varangians (not just WRG
roadkill, but really expensive WRG roadkill). Only a real love for the period
and the army would motivate someone to subject themselves to that.

On history: we're talking about the period that spans the siege of
Constantinople in 1453, when the Byzantine Empire, aka the City State of
Constantinople, damned near beat the Ottoman Turks. Definitely one of those
heroic, tragically, poignant "what if" moments in history.

On history: you get to play Jean le Mengre, aka Marshal Boucicault, the epitome
of the French knight. Not only that, but you get to play a really pissed off
Boucicaut, who, after getting his butt kicked at Nicopolois and watching most
of his peers get either captured or killed, went back to France, begged for an
army to do it all over again, and, when he was denied, took his personal retinue
to campaign with the Byzantines against the Turks. Boucicault, by the way,
served with the Teutonic Knights, later served as governor of Genoa, and
finished his career in captivity in England after leading the French vanguard
at Agincourt and being captured as a result.

On history: you get Manuel II Paleologous, the last Byzantine emperor to have
the full greatness of character exemplified by the best of the Byzantines:
great politician - managed to placate the Catholic church without alienating
the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch; great diplomat - travelled all the way to
London for Christmas of 1401, and, while he didn't get troops, did get a
sizable sum of gold from Henry IV; great soldier - led the last all-Greek
Byzantine army to defeat the Turks in an open field battle, at Thesselonika in
1389 (before becoming emperor).

Then there's the army list:

Skirmishers: You don't get any regular light cavalry (at least not on any
playable variant), which is about my only complaint. You do get a mix of light
cav types, some just bow and some JLS,B,Sh. You get regular, shielded light
infantry, plenty with bow, though other weapons are available too.

Line troops: You have what I consider to be the best support troops: reg LMI
B,Sh. Up to 8 stands of these can also have JLS, making them excellent elephant
killers. On 1600 points I usually end up with about 72 4-to-a-stand bowmen,
though you can get more.

Shock troops: You can get just about anything you might reasonably want on this
list: Reg or Irr EHK; SHK who can be Irr B or Irr A; EHC armed with L,B,Sh that
can be Irr B or Irr A; oh, yes, and Almughuvars. You do have to chose between
the Almughuvars and the SHK, but overall a very powerful array of shock troops.

There are knight/cav armies that can amass a comparable amount of shooting (like
100 Years' War English), and there are knight/cav armies that can amass
comarable shock power (like Medieval Spanish), but I don't think there's any
army in the knight/cav genre that's clearly superior to this one.

I don't in fact know Mark's views on Ms. (?) Lohan [and yes, I know that
wasn't what he meant..]. I would note that if Chris is married to my
wife, he'd better start doing some of the housework Wink.

Now, back to the question at hand...

I obviously think that Sassanids are pretty damn good in 25mm. The
combination of SHC/El able to work together gives them the edge over e.g.
Timurids, in my opinion.

I suspect that in fact they may be even better in 15mm: you lose out
because the shock troops are relatively slow and unwieldy, but the LC is
dirt cheap and numerous *and* there tend to be fewer armies that want lots
of terrain, the army's weakness. So I see no reason to move.

[On a different but related note - anyone have a new email address for
Craig Scott? My recent mails to him have been bouncing]

Other candidates: Timurid gets you the terrain troops and superior mounted
at the cost of some loss of focus and inability to combine El with cav.
Medieval Spanish gets you knights and Almughavars and longbowmen, which
all work together pretty well, but at the cost of poor light troops and
vulnerability to El (in my opinion, anyway). Any of the OW Chinese lists
get you huge resilience at the cost of being cumbersome and not very
hard-hitting, in general. And so on... there are not, I think, sensible
answers to this, but a survey of the NICT lists likely gets you as far as
you can go. Any of those choices would be fine in 15mm, although I think
the Spanish have a harder time slightly.

In 15mm only I might consider Mongol, and I think that MesoAmerican armies
are better with a larger field also.

I only wish that I knew a fraction of the Sassanid history that Mark knows
of the Byzantines.
