Here is a question that has bothered me for the better
part of 18 years, but just last night irratated the
@#$%^& out of me.

Is there a better way to cost out troops? Adding 25
or 10 points to each unit seems a very confusing way
to cost out command factors.

For example, a unit of 2E IrgC LI B sh cost 12+25=37
2E RegC LI B sh cost 16+10=26

the irregulars cost more, manuver less, take twice the
damage from HTH....seems a bit odd to me.

Regulars should cost more, period.

The rulebook argues that the higher cost of irregs is
to encourage the use of larger units. Well, lets look
at larger units:

32 man 8E Reg C MI LTS/JLS/sh @20pt=160+10=170
32 man 8E Irg C MI LTS/JLS/sh @16pt=128+25=153

Hmm.....technically cheeper, but taking x2 CPF from
HTH means they actually cost x2 the above figure. 1/2
the staying power for twice the price. No wonder
Chris downgrades everyone to IrrD. the difference of
18pt per unit over the typical 12-13 unit 1200pt army
means the irreg will get 2 additional 100pt units.

I'm not encouraged to play larger units with Irregs,
especially since they don't manuver well. In fact,
the larger the units the more you need of them
specifically because they don't move well other than
directly ahead. Therefore you need enough to cover the
table (or between terrain) to maintain cohession. On
the contrary, I'm encouraged to suck up the cost
differntial and play smaller Irreg units just so I can
manuver enough to keep enemy off my flanks. 16 man
LMI units as opposed to 32 man. I know some people
like the big irreg units, but how much of this is to
simply absorb the crippling damage of x2 CPF?

Am I wrong? I could be, but I thought I'd open my
mouth and find out.

boyd

Is there arules question in here, or are you just asking the group at large how
they buy their armies in competitive games?

Not really a rules question as much as an open topic
for general discussion. It is a little of asking how
people run their armies and a little of is there a
better way to cost average troops. Perhaps a
cheatsheet way of determining the point of deminishing
returns on size vs. cost.
