I hope this is a proper post for this board.

I'm looking for some advice on the use of artillery in both 15mm and 25mm play.
I'm curious about what other players are doing with artillery and what has been
effective.

I have not tried it in 25mm yet, but in 15mm, I do not seem to be able to get a
good shot off to save my life, so I'm thinking I might be doing something wrong
(besides buying it in the first place of course).

Thanks, and if you want to send offline, please feel free.

P.S. Any chance that Scott could make a list rule that any artillery played by
me would automatically count as baggage camp, or perhaps an expendable?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm mostly interested in the use of
bombards and organ guns. I think almost anyone can figure out how to use bolt
shooters on carts that shoot 360 ... ;-)

I've seen bombards used effectively in 25mm, mostly by Ottoman Turks or
Burgundian Ordnance. The times I recall, the artillery was always facing
into a terrain gap or other choke point and supported by other cheap units
around it. Ott turks was particularly effective since they had chains for
their bombards and lots of cheap units around. You have to look for a list
with irregular bombards (cheaper than regular) and a lot of them. Two
bombards is too small a unit, you need two units of three ideally.

I play 25 mm Romans mostly using the bolt shooters on foot, cart mounted
bolt shooters are too expensive for my taste. Bombards and bolt shooters on
foot play a lot a like. Foot bolt shooters are slower to move into position
but tactically respond much quicker. Bombards you pretty much have to guess
in advance either where you are going to attack or where your opponent is
going to attack two turns in advance.

Never seen organ guns used effectively, the range is too short.

Being from the Deep South region, my regional coordinator forbids me from
playing less manly scales like 15 mm. :)

Ok I have most likely run more Art for the longest period of time then
anybody else. The first problem is the enemy will not make themselves a
target for you and if they do (christ d), you dead.

15mm they don't work, table is too big and Art is too slow except cart
mounted Bolt shooters. Cart mounted bolt shooters are to employed as
mobile anti-tank unit just the germans used in WW II. Keep them in
reserve until our opponent's attack is committed.

To do well with Art, you must have good support troops and close up the
terrain and force your opponent to attack only where you have setup fire
lanes. Remember you must plan 3 moves ahead with Stone throwers and
bombards and 2 moves for bolt shooters and organ guns.
Ex. turn B, you march art into an area the enemy has a 2e LC w/ B, 2e
HC, 6e LMI. you stop 280p away from the LMI and 360p away from the LC
and HC.
turn C, Bolt shooters and Organ guns may fire as long as they do not
move. Bombard and Stone throwers can't shoot or move but it does matter
the enemy LC should approach and charge at all cost. the Lmi is now 160p
away and the HC is 240p away. Bolts & guns should open up on any target.
A lucky shot will stop the LMI if fail a waver test only. 6 fig crew
will 12 @ 4 = 36. The Cav will be hurt if you shoot at it, LC should
recall if it didn't charge and HC will have to test. If the LC is
anywhere in front of you, you'll have to shoot at it because of shooter
to your front.
Turn D, If the LMI can get into Skirmish they should and charge. They
will won. The HC will move off to the side to charge.

Lessons
Infantry will kill art.
Light can counter and screen Art very effectively.
Cav is risky about 50/50.
If you don't plan your fire lanes, you will not get a shot in a game.
Art is defensive, you set it up some place and use it there.
To learn how to run Art, fight against an army with them.
Art is easily to avoid.
