I have a question that I'm sure everybody thinks is really obvious but we've
been arguing
about it here.
Artillery on the ground can shoot over intervening friendly troops to enemies on
the
ground or does one of them (either enemy or artillery) have to be higher, like
on a hill or in
a fortification?
Important because we want to play a Ming kicking out the Mongols campaign.

Only certain artillery can shoot over friends and only under these
circumstances:
"Stone-throwers or bolt-shooters can shoot from a rise, low ridge or knoll, or
from or to a rampart or hill, or any troops from or to a tower, over intervening
troops who are at least 40 paces distant from both them and their target."

Note that a cart is not a rise, low ridge, knoll, hill, rampart or tower. You
cannot shoot over friendlies just by being on a cart.

Yes, a good thing, and very historical too.
My comment was not directed at you, Greg. :)

Oh, I know Jon ... :-)
I added that, because my meaning wasn't clear in the first place ...
largely eliminating the purpose of the post.
What I've had success with is putting these things on hills and using
friendlies in front to remove the first shooting priority from play.
People might want to try it. It can be very effective in some
instances ... like being an Early Byzantine player in the arena of
SHK armies. ;-)

Gimmick against a newbie = going down to the schoolyard and stealing
lunch money
Gimmick against a veteran who knows the rules = most likely worthless

Another good answer.
These don't qualify as gimmiks to me. They are just another shooting
platform. You can diffuse the effects and/or make them shoot at poor
targets ... but that isn't any different from what you can do with
any other shooting platform.

I also wouldn't consider cart mounted bolt shooters a gimmick, I
think the original comment about worthless was more about their cost
versus how much you get out of them. Some people consider them
pricey for what you get. Not all that maneuverable, and not really
hard enough hitting.

I am pretty sure that Early Byzantines do not get carts for their
bolt shooters unless there is erata in the list clarifications or you
are describing Nike's as early. Just some fodder for your post.
