Please provide me with clarification regarding 5.233 “Recovering broken
troops.” second bullet, “having passed within 80 paces of steady friendly close
or loose formation foot.
Assuming the broken troops are over 240 paces from known enemy, does a single
staff element of close or loose formation foot within 80 paces (i. e. Viking
general) meet the requirement as friendly close or loose foot for recovering
the broken troops?
The phrase “having passed within 80 paces” seems to imply that the routing unit
must make some move (i. e. rout move) to 80 paces from a friendly close or
loose foot to qualify for the above condition. Suppose the friendly close or
loose foot moved to within 80 paces of the router in another movement phase
(march move, staff move, etc.), must the router still make the rout move to
recover? Or would the router recover at the successful conclusion of the
friendly close or loose foot move?
I’m finishing a Viking army and I’ve never had to think about foot generals
previously. They’ve always been mounted in the other armies.
Thanks in advance for the help and thanks for all of your work on the “Warrior”
system.

Yes. As some additional help, note that Warrior is to be read literally,
therefore 'troops' (which the rules point out is short for 'body of troops')
which means both units and single elements.
A single element close or loose foot general is actually the perfect troop type
to perform this type of recovery, as:
1. It does not take a waver for seeing the router within 120p (5.52 Staff
Elements and Routers).
2. It can then recover the body from shaken (5.143).

No. 'passed within 80p' means however it happened.
