I dropped out of the miniatures thing for a 10-15 year period and
have been playing mostly DBA(15mm) since I got back in the mix. (A
matter of finding opponents). But I would like to try a more intense
set of rules
I have a copy of Warrior (played WRG 5th-6th back in the day) and I
am interested getting a better feeling of how the rules work, so I
might try a game at a local convention, but I have a ton of questions.
After reading with interest the critiques of various army lists I
would to get some insights about the basics of army construction.
One thing that I had not expected is that you guys a recommending much
smaller units (2-4 elements) than I would have thought. As I remember
the rules you can have units of up-to 12 elements. Are units of this
size ever played?
So the basics
1) What is a standard size army(in points) for a Saturday "Beer and
pretzels" game? Would this be markedly larger or smaller than a
convention pick up game or even a tournament game?
2) how many elements (very roughly obviously) would this amount to?
3) How large (in elements) would the units be and why?
I would like to get a few low-level general insights of army
composure, rather than a unit by unit evaluation, but I know you need
a "base line" army to give me meaningfully answers and since I have
always played Byzantine (550-1100 roughly)I would like to use
Maurikian DK 19
Byzantine armies sort of fall into two groups, HC what I think most
people would consider the main fighting body. And supporting Infantry
The Cav
1)with a small core of elite Boukellarioi
Reg B HC L/B/Shd can have 2-12
Can upgrd any of these to EHC
2)Main body Kavallarioi lancers
Reg C HC L/Shd can have 8-24
Can upgrd any of these to EHC and/or Reg B
supported by Kavallarioi archers (can be attachments of HC)<Is this a
valuable tweak?
Reg C LC B/Shd can have 8-24
Can upgrd any of these to Reg B
3)Supporting Allies LC/HC many options
So in the Cav what would be the cost effective or playable upgrades?
Roughly how many
elements and in units of what size (how many elements per unit)
Foot; general acting mostly in support of the Cav
1) Skutatoi Reg C MI LTS/JLS?Shd can have 0-24
Can upgrd 1/2 of these to HI
2) Psiloi supporting light foot
Bow Reg C LMI or LI B/Shd can have 0-24
Skirmishers Reg C LI JLS/Shd can have 0-12
Servants Reg D Li S/SS can have 4-12
Same question, what would be the cost effective upgrades? Roughly how
many elements
and in units of what size (how many elements per unit)
Other stuff-Artillery, Open order foot(slavs) LC allies etc
What would be useful to add to the mix? What sort of unit should I
emphsize, and why?
I would like to emphasize that I am not tuning a Tournament killer, I
am looking for sort of a army list 101 or ABC, and I would like to get
a feel of what it takes to put an Army together.
Thanks in advance for your insights
