Well, I was hoping that this site had something on Chinese horse armor. It
really doesn't, though. However, it's still a pretty cool site for anyone
interested in the relevant period of Chinese military dress and equipment:

and the Han are fairly widespread. The real issues of finding meaningful
content revolves around the post-Han, pre-Sung dynasties (even the Tang haven't
been as well documented in english as they could be) for China and just about
everything for enemies or neighbors of China from the Han Dynasty onward.

OK, poking around with Google image search a bit I came up with the following
images that contrast European and Chinese style horse armor. The European image
is from the Rennaisance period, but still representative of the head armor used
throughout the SHK period. The Chinese image I know less about, since it isn't
my period, but I believe this is a Tang era artifact.

Not an expert really either, but I think this is quite a bit earlier than
the tang. The site seems to be about the Wusun culture which was
contemporary to the Han. For one thing, it is bronze, and I think they were
using iron by the Tang period. Here is a link to the page with the rest of
the pictures. The sword picture next to it is definately from the Han
period, note it is also Bronze and has the distinctive Ring pommel of Han
swords.

Iron smithing was a major industry during the Han period but they weren't
widely using it in warfare yet. They prefered using it for agricultural
tools and industrial tools. The need for iron for civil purposes was far
greater. I suspect the cost of completely refitting such a massive army with
iron when they had perfectly servicable Bronze equipement was prohibitive.
Not enough ROI.
Incredibly, they took to Chrome plating the broze weapons to prevent
corrosion. Can you believe that! Chrome plating in 200 BC. It had al the
hallmarks of a modern Liberal government. Including the internal political
back-stabbing.

If anyone has better info, please share it, I always have my ear to the
ground.
