On behalf of my rapidly-assembling late imperial Roman field force,
when will their supplement be ready?

Merry christmas, happy holidays and a very merry new year

nows, I could get 2 solid weeks of no distractions and finish up the first dra
ft. Look for sometime during the latter half of 2003.

My late imperial Roman field force grows restless. Can they expect
guidance for large-scale actions in July?

regards

Jim

Having started off on the wrong foot with my comments about Oriental Warrior,
I'm not going to kick off what will likely be a lively debate about Classical
Warrior. I will say that I picked it up at Cold Wars, I've given it a fairly
good first read through, and while there are several points that are
controversial, and certainly no pleasing everyone, I think it will accomplish a
couple of important -- in my opinion -- objectives:
(1) get people to dust off those Carthaginian armies as suddenly being worth
something; Hannibal was one of the finest and best known generals of our
period, and we should be doing more to show him off;
(2) get people to play Alexandrian Imperial instead of Seleucids, because now it
really _is_ a better list.

I don't have my copy of Classical Warrior yet so I really can't
comment on the actual lists at this point, but as a long time Seleucid
player I'm very curious how you came to this conclusion.

Martin
who is also curious what they did to the two Celt armies as well as
the Hoplites....

Everybody, please be patient. The sales page will be updated either
later today or sometime tomorrow. Problems at my end.

Well...(deep breath). I have just barely scanned the CW lists for Later
Hoplite Greeks and Hellenistic Greeks (the only two armies I play, well
maybe Byzantines in a theme), and I just can hardly contain my enthusiasm.

Finally, finally, finally, a game designer has actually thought carefully
about how these troop types function against their historical opponents
and done a fantastic job of reifying that into lists and list rules.

As a historical scholar, there is about 5% to 10% in these lists that I
would argue with, BUT I believe that there are reasonably sound arguments
in response to my own, and I can understand, just in terms of game
mechanics, list balance or other factors, how FHE would accept those other
perspectives over mine. The notes after each list are also of high quality
and very informative. This sort of work and research helps to underscore
miniatures as more than just a game, but as a legitimate historical
endeavor.

Huge kudos and many thanks to Scott, Bill, the other two FHE, and the
playtesters and other contributors on an excellent piece of work so far.
Soon I'll look closely at all the other lists, and at the special hoplite
rules (I haven't done that yet), and add more comments here if warranted.
Again, many thanks and great job, FHE.

I was finally able to look at a few more CW lists today, in particular the
Macedonian/Alexandrian lists. I also took a look at the Japanese lists
from OW. Again, I must say how impressed I am by the research behind these
lists and the obvious desire to fold historical accuracy into the notion
of playability and play balance. As a group, these lists are FAR better
tools for historical gaming than ANYTHING we have had before. The
difference is like the difference between reading a masters thesis and a
high school term paper. Anyone who plays the Alexandrian lists, or
Successor lists, or even the Samurai lists, is going to get a real feel
for what it was like to command those particular armies, each with its
unique attributes, good and bad. And yes, Alex will be a bear, but FHE
wisely *compensated* for this in game terms by making the morale grade of
the troops relatively higher than similar analogues, or by other methods.
I'm not suggesting this was done *on purpose*, only that what WAS done was
done in such a way as to be sensitive to play balance; As in, sure your
companions can charge impetuously without a general, but how much
unshielded Reg A HC do you really want to spend points on; or...sure
Alex's pikemen, etc., will not be uneasy when within 160 p of ALex, who
is in turn w/in 160 of enemy, but how much do you want your unshielded HC
CinC w/in 160 p of enemy?

I suspect (hope) that many players will, in search of a killer army, be
drawn to Hannibal and Alex and their list rules; however, playing those
armies may well prove MORE challenging than many others precisely because
there are SO MANY *weapons* and tactics from which to choose! Trying to
build an army that is *all things to all people* and thus is also neither
fish nor fowl may well spell disaster. Usually better to know what you are
and be that, know what you do well and do that--like Nebraska used to do
in football.

Call me a sycophant, but again, great job!
