A report of the efforts of my Picts, in my first use of this system (or
something like it) in about 6 years.
This was a dark Ages theme mindless barbarian bash. I faced Vikes, Saxons,
and Arthurian Britons. The first two were Pictish classic enemies- we beat
the Saxons at Nechtensmere, our encounters with the Vikes are why Scotland is
not called Pictland - they did not go well. We didnt face Arthurian britons,
but we faced Strathclyde Britons, located where Glasgow is now. So all 3 were
perfect historical opponents.
The Picts are interesting in that they get very large Fast Warrior units.
Our warbands are 12 elements, other peoples were 6-8. However, as we only get
3 units, and nothing that can support them, and no standard, only the middle
one has any chance of being impetuous. This is balanced by the Boss' chariot,
which can keep the enemy uneasy, but only if he puts himself in harm's way.
Game 1 against Jim Bisignani's Vikings. Remember that famous description
of the final scene of Hamlet, 'Everybody dies'? That was about it. We hit on
the second bound, and all the warbands routed each other. Unfortunately two
of mine went, and the general didnt like what he saw and left as well. Time
for coffee.
Game 2 against the Saxons. keeping him uneasy with the chariots and
charging with one impetuous unit almost worked. Unfortunately that also
forced me to charge in with the general, and chariots are really bad against
close order foot. Things were going well when Angus Mac Fergus let us down
again, shaking, then routing on 2 die rolls.
Game 3 against the Britons. Virtually his whole army was D's, making my
shoeless, pointy stick half naked guys absolute titans by comparison. One
impetuous charge blew away half his army, but the contortions necessary to
get it in left me with a hanging flank, and when my guys on that end were hit
from 2 directions they gave way. Angus was manly for once and intervened to
save the day by staving off the enemy general's HC. A fine little game, rich
in vicissitudes. I think I was ahead, but it ended as a draw.
Bottom line- Fast Warrior is cool, even if you don't know how to play. It
makes the perfect Sun AM end to a con, having enough more richness and depth
compared to DBM to be more satisfying, without causing further damage to
already bruised brains.
