Cold Wars Report
We had three tourneys and a demo game. I do not know all the tourney results
– that will be up on the NASAMW site soon. I do know that Scott and I lost in
the finals to a very good team of Bill Low and Mike Mallamaci and that we had as
many people playing as DBM and more than WAB.
I did have the joy of seeing 2000 points of 25mm Midianites!! Whoa!
The demo was a lot of fun – Medieval German Princes v. Hussites in 25mm. We
had six players – three on a side – and many onlookers. Jake and Dennis
helped tremendously, proving that it just can’t be done with one guy.
The Germans massed their knights and beat down the Hussite center but that was
as much due to the simple deployment I gave them as anything the Hussites did.
Frederick of Brandenburg took home a free rule book.
We have a demo planned for Hcon with Ed Bernhard at the helm. It will be in
line with the late Crusades theme.
I am working on a clarification update that will be in place by the middle of
May and hold still through Hcon. There are some smaller clean-up issues, but
the big one is 4.52 – using a march to qualify as an advance for orders. I am
not happy with the clarification I wrote in the 20 Jan update and plan to change
it and get it right once and for all.
A note – many players did not have a copy of the clarifications with them and
some did not even know there were any. Please help us get the word out that the
rules to Warrior include the rulebook and the clarification update available at
our website and the egroup. Print a copy and have it with you at the tourneys
you attend. Thanks!
On the subject of clarifications, it really isn’t very helpful to hear smart
ass comments about how ‘you said there would be no errata (changes,
clarifications, etc) to Warrior’. We never said any such thing. I am far
from perfect, as you all know, and I actually think only three pages of
clarifications with a rulebook as intricate as Warrior isn’t bad. My charter
is to never make a change that kills an army or fundamentally alters the basic
mechanics. We will clarify the rules as much as we feel is needed to ease play.
Scott and I are looking to make sure we reduce the number of tourneys where we
have player judges. It isn’t that I don’t trust a guy to be objective,
it’s that I don’t want my game delayed by someone getting me or my opponent
to come over to answer a question. This is not a big issue at all, but since we
do cheetah flips to get everyone playing who wants to, Scott or I often get into
tourneys/scales to make an even number but then also have to ump. (Worse of
course if we are on the same team in doubles! lol). I am umping the Friday
tourney at Hcon and Scott has Thursday and the NICT. Anyone who wants to help
out by jumping in if we have an odd number Thurs/Fri please let us know. We
will always take volunteers to be non-player umps, too.
The Four Horsemen had a business meeting and besides the boring admin stuff we
have a couple things to announce –
1. We are going to begin to reward recruiting in the following way: if a person
buys a Warrior rulebook through our website and emails Jake with the name and
address of the guy that got him into the game, the ‘recruiter’ will get a $5
FHE gift certificate.
2. We will be announcing the Fifth Horsemen Program within three weeks. All
the details are worked out, we just need to get the shirts made and craft the
announcement/rules.
3. Campaign Warrior looks like our next rules product. The rules are
essentially done, but I do want some more playtesting - especiialy from
'outside'. In addition, it will contain four pre-made campaigns – Rome,
Crusades, Kingmaker and a generic campaign. We are also exploring incorporating
DBM and WAB campaign rules in the game as well.
4. Feudal Warrior is coming along nicely with a planned Historicon release.
A great time had by all. Keep your eyes out for an FHE press release in the
next two weeks.
