I noticed that several elephant armies let you arm the driver. Am I missing
something? If you have an elephant with 2 armed crew (JLS) what good does a
JLS armed driver really do? I understand, that within 40 paces you get some
extra missile fire and he can fight in a different direction from main crew.
Unless there is some other benefit I am missing, is it really worth the extra
cost?

In later rounds? Correct me if I'm wrong, but only two figures can fight.
Did I miss something about following rounds somewhere?

According to rule 13.16 2 figures of an elephant crew can fight in a
charge or if being charged and any and all in subsequent bounds of
hand to hand combat.
So a burmese elephant with a fighting crew of 6 could fight with 2
during the first round of combat and 6 during any subsequent rounds.
Chariot crew are affected the same way.

Note that drivers with JLS don't shoot. Sometimes you can arm the
driver with a JLS on an otherwise B armed crew, and you'd use the JLS
driver at contact for the +1, as you get to choose the 2 crew that
fight.
