Indeed - in period, there's a lot of potential 9although the large amounts
of HI armour one has to buy still hurts).
Last Crusader NASAMW Theme, I took the NASAMW list with a ton of close
foot - something like 3x6E LTS, Sh and 3x6E CB, I think. If I recall
correctly, this was just after a debate about whether close foot could
ever defeat cav armies - and it worked fine, running over a French
Crusader, an Ottoman turk (run with all the big MC blocks as Boyd has
recently been discussing) and something else in the other two games to
give me the win. In an open, though, I think it would have been complete
toast b/c the foot can't fight any decent foot.
As it seems to be list season, how about the Grenadines? I've been
considering running these for a while, and I like the new list; probably
better on larger tables (i.e. 15mm in current format) but potentially
viable even in current 25mm format, I think:
2E CinC w/ Reg A EHK/HK L, Sh
3 x 2E Sub ditto
3 x 2E EHK/HK ditto
4E Reg B LC B
4E Reg B LC CB (compulsory)
6 x 2E Reg B LC JLS, Sh
2 x 2E Irr B EHK L, Sh
8E compulsory Irr C LI CB
At 1600 points, you get 9 EHK units, 8 excellent LC units, and the LI. 15
of those units are Reg A or B, and 2 more are Irr B - now that's morale
and training!
The downsides are that you can't be SHK, and the compulsory CB troops -
although the LC CB are OK against enemy heavy mounted.
Anyway, thoughts?

I have a Granadine army in 15mm. I've never played it in a tournament. Back then
I was playing TOG, and using the WRG Gray Book list, meaning you had a maximum
of 6 stands of EHK and they couldn't wedge. That was just a little too
challenging for tournament play, but I did have fun playing the army in a
number of pickup games.
I used to play the LC in 3 stand units, meaning that once in skirmish both the
CB and the JLS guys shot with a full 4 figures on one element's frontage. That
cuts down some on the number of LC units you can get, but it's an approach
worth thinking about, as it also minimizes the number of times you'll take 2
CPF from enemy lights in return fire. And believe me, if your opponent's LC is
taking 2 CPF in prep across the board and sitting 40p away from your LC than
have taken less than 2 CPF, then he is in a world of trouble.
I'd take fewer knights; I think 9 units is overkill, and they'll seldom all get
into battle. I'd also certainly take the Mercenary Bowmen. Those are excellent
shooters that prove their worth in many situations. Finally, I'd give some
thought to take the Maranid ally general. You get a solid spear unit that is
particularly handy against elephants (LTS,JLS), some bow-armed LC, and you get
some shielded LI with Bow, always a good thing. Probably worth the price of an
ally general.
Here's a stab at a version as I'd buy it these days:
CinC w/2 stands Reg A EHK/HK L,Sh
2x sub w/2 stands Reg A EHK/HK L,Sh
2x 2 stands Irr B EHK L,Sh
1x 6 stands Reg C LMI B,Sh
1x 8 stands Irr C LI CB
Maranid ally w/2 stands Irr B LC JLS,Sh
1x 8 stands Irr C LI B,Sh
1x 4 stands Irr C LC JLS,B,Sh/B
1x 4 stands Reg B LC B
2x 2 stands Reg B LC CB
4x 3 stands Reg B LC JLS,Sh

Boyd, I recommend you take another look at Med Spanish. I just played them
in a 1200 pt tourney. I fought 2xEl armies both run by NICT qualifiers and
managed to do ok... The tourney also contained 2xroman players, 5
feudal/medieval including me, 2 barbarians and a chinese army.
I took some risk by taking an army with some missile-vulnerable units and a
lot of small units, several with no punch at all in hth, but on the other hand
it is a force in the center of my 'style' strike zone and one I have been
playing the hell out of in both scales and at all point values.

There are none of those. You have a CB minimum that can be taken as LMI or
LI that I could live without, but I take them as LI and just don't get them
into things they can't handle. Your other LI minimum is S, 1/2 Sh that I like
using very much.

Ewan, my first thought is elephants, Longbows and pikemen. Unless
for some reason EHK is required, I'd downgrade to HK since the
factors are so similar. the regluarness of the army will allow you
to manuver, but eventually you will have to step up and charge some
LI with your LC which will get harry around beasties. the current
darline reg LMI LB will slice this army up, and if faced with wall'o
pike there isn't much you can do except kill LI.
I've looked and looked at all mounted K based armies and can't find
one that will do at 1200 points in an elephant/Roman rich environment
like Florida ;)

Those LI, S, Sh guys chewed up my elephants and spit them out making me have to
"man up" and take a waiver test!
