Something of an answer to this post...

Subject: Italian Condotta
I recall Greg bringing this up before, but I wasn't satisfied with
the answer. What do you think of the Reg C Marines on this list as
front rank LHI, CB, 2HCT, Sh; back rank LMI, JLS, Sh? How does this
matchup, and what are its capabilities vis-a-vis various opponents?
Looks good against El, but would all JLS, SH or back rank CB be
better against most opponents? What do ya'll think?

Do these look good against Elephants?
First off, CB is the worst possible missile weapon to attack El with. JLS
requires shooting from 40p away, which is unlikely. So, you are only likely
to put one CPF on an El unit (and perhaps not even that) in prep shooting.
Then you get charged, and must waver, likely uneasy due to the El...not a
waver I ever want to make. However, let's assume you pass and receive the
Elephants charge.
Support shooting is not a good idea against some El, and won't generally do
a CPF anyway. Now you have 12 figures fighting at a 3 (or a 2 if the El have
a Pike crewman) for 30 (or 24). The Elephants are 10 at a 2 plus likely 2 at
a 1 and 2 at a 0 for 25. You appear to win unless the El have Pike...but you
had to pass that bad waver test.
2HCT can't be used in the woods...so these are more likely brush troops. A
16 figure unit of them isn't cheap, either at 106 points.
These types of analysis are lacking, however, because they don't talk about
what you intend to do with this unit. Where in your battle line does it go?
Why? What will you be combining it with? Is it supposed to attack? Hold the
line? Exploit bad terrain?
I don't think it does any of those last 3 things very well. It's not a unit
you press the attack with. Given that it is loose order, it can't hold an
open area against mounted without a dangerous waver test. 2HCT prohibits its
use in woods.
