I wouldn't get hung up on the vulnerability of the Brigans to enemy cavalry.
You're going to be running them side by side with Irr A SHK, so any cavalry that
gets close enough to the Brigans is going to have other problems. It's called
"combined arms tactics", and it's a good thing.
You want them armed with 2HCT in the front, JLS in the back. And you want to buy
the sacred standard so that you can get these guys going impetuously. The only
question then is loose or close order.
The Brigans are going to hit harder, get to combat faster, and operate in a
wider range of troop types as LHI/LMI. Assuming they get off an impetuous charge
they should beat pikemen and elephants at contact. That's very helpful for your
knights who (a) want somebody to disorder the pikemen for them, and (b) don't
want to fight elephants.
In spite of all of that, I'd take them as: HI 2HCT,Pa/MI JLS. These guys can
only operate in the open, and it takes them a bound longer to get into combat,
and they'll often have to take elephant charges at the halt because of their
shorter charge reach, but I think they better balance the rest of the army
because of their tremendous resistance to missile fire.
Here's a list of important tournament troop types that the HI Brigans beat and
the LHI Brigans lose to:
- Midianite Arab camels
- Burmese elephants
- English longbowmen
And they still beat pikemen at contact.
So that's my $.02 worth.
