As for the terrain selection system, we really do have a vast majority of
players that prefer it at that level. That may change over time, but for
now it is a key feature of those events.
But local events can use any method and I would strongly recommend trying
out a variety of formats. Also make sure to post your results and
conclusions so we can take those experiences into account.
Have you tried fixed terrain formats?
I have been playing in Australian fixed terrain comps for 15 years. There
are several advantages:
1. You don't need to lug terrain pieces around.
2. You don't need to spend time dicing etc. at the start of each game.
3. Fixed terrain is a great 'leveller'. Reach army or player is
potentially equally advantaged or disadvantaged. To win each player needs
to make the most of the terrain on their table. This also prevents the use
of custom terrain pieces. Eg the hill with rough ground all round to
protect artillery or the square wood.
4. The terrain is of a consistent standard. If the comp has access to nice
terrain, then the tables will be impressive!
