And if Jon were in charge of the rules of chess he'd no doubt want to get rid of
all those pesky pawns, as they cause way too much dicking around.

Just to make sure the other side gets our voice in here:
There absolutely is a strong contingent of us that like 4 hour games. If I don't
want to have to use my brain, if I just want to push pretty lead around while
downing beer an pretzels, then there are plenty of games for me to choose from:
War Hammer Ancient Battles, Armati, Shock of Impact, DBA, DB.... take your pick.

I want to be challenged intellectually and competitively. I want a game with
nuance and subtlety. And I want enough time for all that to play out to a
decisive conclusion.

The tempo I play at is pretty quick, and I've been known to get a bit
short-tempered with more deliberate players. Four hours is barely enough time,
but it is enough. We have it just right guys. Don't ever change.

I have found less than 4 hours to be more of a lottery.

I agree with mark stone as does our group.

I agree in principle and besides I like to see as much lead on the table as is
possible and still be able to maneuver.
