 |

I'm still kicking around the idea of building a Greek army (in
particular a Theban army with Thessalian allies) using the new list.
The more I look at it, the more attracted I am to the option to make
the hoplites irregular HI, LTS, JLS,SH. As this loses the access to
the new Greek infantry rules, and I mad?
Also, am I reading this right in that if you take the irregular option
the Sacred Band unit becomes "Irr A"?
Finally, I have a fair amount of naked Hoplites from Museum
Miniatures, but want some armoured figures as well. Is anyone aware
of a company that makes early holplites in the "bell curiass"?

One issue is getting what you pay for.
An element of Irr C HI LTS,JLS,Sh costs 24 points!
Thus, a relatively small (as close order foot units go) 16 man unit is
121 points, as much as many elephant or knight units.
I would rather have mostly Reg D MI hoplites, with some Reg C elements
so that they could be prompted to charge, and in the gaps some high
morale (Reg A/B) half HI hoplite units.
Instead, look at the Hellenistic Greek list. You have a lot of good
tools here:
Bodies of 8E MI LTS,Sh, all Reg D except one element. 110 points per
such unit, good value.
Reg C LC JLS,Sh that fights 1.5 ranks.
Peltasts, some pike if you want it, an excellent selection of light
infantry, and some other useful troops (Irr B LMI 2HCW,JLS,Sh/JLS,Sh,
lance cavalry, etc.)
I'd run them as Achaeans, as follows.
CinC 2E Reg B HC L (145)
Sub 2E Reg B HC L (95)
2E Reg B HC L (64)
2E Reg B LC L (3
2E Reg C LC JLS,Sh (42) fight 1.5 ranks
6E Reg C LC JLS,Sh (106) fight 1.5 ranks
2 units of 4E Reg C LI JLS,Sh (2x42=84)
2 units of 6E Reg C LI S,Sh (2x58=116)
2E Reg C LI S,Sh (26)
5 units of 8E Reg D(1 C) MI LTS,Sh (5x110=550)
4E Reg B LMI LTS,JLS,Sh (106)
2 units of 2E Reg B LHI LTS,JLS,Sh (2x74=148)
4E Irr B LMI 2HCW,JLS,Sh/JLS,Sh (79)
1599 army points
20 units, 2 commands, 47 scouting
Good skirmishing, solid line troops, and good reserve.
