I'll throw out some uninformed ideas that have no basis in game play. (This
should not make me too different from many posters on miniature gaming
listservs.)

-- shoot the lancers first -- those artillery on carts might work for that
-- sacrifice the legionary cavalry to wear out the lancers (hard to sell the
troopers on this idea perhaps)
-- put the legionaires on a hill
-- put the legionaries behind rough terrain
-- use ditches and palisades
-- used allied troops
-- flank march big time (okay maybe that isn't a good idea)

Sure this doesn't help, but it is my 2 cents.

John Meunier

To add to John here, don't EIR get LI detachments
and/or caltrops? Seems to me they used to carry a bad
of sh*t for all ocasions. D,HTW, JLS, caltrops,
stakes, electric shavers, whipcream, bondage mask, and
bullwhips.

Maybe this changed...

The one (1) time I ran a Roman army, I set the LI
detachment out ahead and made them stand and receive
the mounted charge in order to expend the cav's Impet.
bonus.

I am thinking this too but have never played arty before. I made
another post about this.

Well, compared to the HI and even the LHI the HC are at least cheaper
units. Still...

All these are excellent ideas of the kind I hoped someone more
tactically innovative than myself would provide. The first two depend
to some extent on being lucky with terrain placement, but you can't
have everything on asilver platter after all. The third point is
really intriguing, especially combined with the arty shooting. Lots of
folks are going to complain about going on the defensive but when
faced with troops which kill your outright what can they expect.
Besides it will be good character building for my usual charge and
roll dice attitude. Thanks. I'll see what I can do.

Probably good idea but just don't want to resort to major screwing
with the list if there's another way. After all not every army has
Sarmatians either.

So do the Aux Bowmen. Also the Arty with a 1 el subgen stuck to it allows
better control of who you shoot. This makes the arty unit very expensive,
but worth it.

I also sacrifice 1 legionaire to let the next one whack the cav (have to
pass a waver for the first one breaking though).

EIR are HTW only. Very lonely out there.

If the LI break and rout, they come back through the HI and the Cav just
converts into the HI which keeps them impetuous. So the LI screen does not
work too well.
