Dave,
Ask Kelly about his machine gun camel army versus my Sarmation horse army.

Sorry, Phil, those camels are under new management.
But I'd be happy to give you a game... ;)

Gents;
Something that might be kinda fun to kick around (or maybe
not...depending on the response), is to see what everyone thinks
what are the armies that would give you a sinking feeling as you
plop down your lead lads in opposition. All things being equal, of
course (like the caliber of your human opponent). I have to conjur
up most of my emotions from 6th Ed.(and a little TOG early on), and
eventually my Warrior experience might alter my list. But to kick
it off, the top 3 armies that gave me that sick, "Oh geez, not
them...." feelings are:
1. Mongol- I had the hardest time with these characters-handled
masterfully by a variety of opponents, but Mike Cook did it the best.
2. Burmese- Yipes, gatling gun gray beasties...always gave me fits.
Chinese Larry Garrett-the master of the East.
3. Nikephorian Byzantine- the Swiss knife of armies...adroitly
played by Dave Gibson.
Just thinking about those armies gives me the heebie-jeebies. Are
there others that might win the psy-ops battle? Be interesting to
hear.
Dave

1. Another Greek army (you did mention psy-ops...I'd have to try
arbitration first)
2. Burmese machine gun elephants
3. Midianite Arab machine gun camels
4. Thompson toting Late Imperial Romans
Favorite enemies to fight (this should be obvious):
1. Turks;
2. Persians;
3. Trojans
4. Crusaders
Half seriously,
Greek

Well, since no one's said it so far, I'll remind everyone: you should worry
about players much more than you should worry about particular armies. I've
never had the privelege of playing Ewan or Derek, but there's a definite top
echelon at Cold Wars/Historicon of about eight other guys that are always tough
competition. Now, I wouldn't say any of them invoke "fear and loathing"... more
like that galvanizing adrenaline rush in the pit of my stomach letting me know
I'm in for the kind of game I came for.
As for armies... ironically the kind I "fear" most are the kind I tend to play:
armies with shock cavalry and quality support troops. So: Medieval Spanish, 100
Year's War English, Knights of Saint John, Byzantines of almost any variety,
Sassanid Persian, and now various flavors of Mongol and Later Tang Chinese.
Partly it is because I know so well what these armies can do, and partly it's
because I spend a lot of time crafting my own army to deal with _other_ threats
(elephants, Romans, etc.) leaving me actually somewhat vulnerable to my own
army type.

lol! I don't think I ever lost a game with them. Sadly, I sold them to a certain
rules author who plays them very well too. I'm thinking shieldless MC is a
Midianites dream come true to face!
