I am looking to build a Nikephorian Byzantine army in 15mm and would
like some suggestions as to which line of miniatures to use. I have
been using Essex exclusively, and have been satisfied, but if there
is a line out there with more animation, etc. I am certainly open to
suggestions.

I would wholeheartedly suggest that you use the Irregular 15mm Maurikian
Byzantine Cavalry, and early Byzantine Cavalry as these pieces have lances
lowered and are charging! The pieces are made so that unlike the Essex figs, the
lances will probably stay on for life even if dropped 5 feet off of a table onto
the concrete! I ought to know as this has happened to me too much!(sigh. . . )
For Infantry I would stick with the Essex line although Irregular does have some
very nice Early Byzantine Skutatoi in addition to a few cool Officer types.
Also, I would check out some of the old glory 15mm as some of those figs are
very good in as far as the foot goes. Their Cav isn't to shabby either. For the
most part it is hit and miss with old glory, you just have to eyeball them!
