I convert DBMers all the time. And WABers.
I finish Fast Warrior games with total beginners in under two hours.
I don't put any markers on my troops and never have.
A 1600 point game is over in well under 4 hours, typically. The only reason
Scott keesp that time limit at the tourneys in PA is the old corps demands
it. I would love to see it change to 3.5 or even better 3.

Just finished my first FW game, Seleucids vs Lysimachids with my regular DBM
opponent. It took two hours for a fairly quick result resulting from a
deployment error from the opposition who put a line of Thracian LC in front of
his Thracian pike block. I charged and routed them with my Settler HC and they
had nowhere to go except bursting through ( how do they do that?) the now shaken
(failed waver) pikes. With the Macedonian Pike and Cretans going shaken that was
that.
Obviously we are both very rusty and a lot of time was spent flicking back and
forth through the rules. The index will prove useful once I figure out why my
computer refuses to print it off. We have obviously been spoilt by DBM as my
opponent bemoaned the paltry record keeping necessary as I don't believe in
festooning 15mm units in washers etc to record fatigue. I want to give Warrior a
fair run but my colleague was in two minds. On one hand Warrior gives a far more
detailed simulation and armies/units with character whereas DBM is faster and
for those of us who only have 3-4 hours every couple of weeks that is the rub.
However, very early days yet. Is anyone else out there trying to convert DBMers?

Paul,
Played two games of FW Saturday with two friends I normally play DBM with. One,
like myself, had played at WRG 7... a few years back, but had bowed to the
tournament pressure and switched to DBM. The other gent had never been an
ancient gamer until DBM. We played a Magyar/PreFeudal German matchup and a Late
Polish/Med.German Prince matchup. The games seemed to move rather quickly,
although I didn't keep track of time. We did have to look several things up and
there were several remarks made about how Warrior seemed easier to look things
up in and easier to understand the intent compared to old 7.5. (Thanks Four
Horsemen!) The DBM only gamer had some trouble adjusting to differences like
being shot at by light horse and having to move in units of elements.
Interestingly, when he was learning DBM, he seemed puzzled that skirmishers
don't shoot and that elements are not grouped into "units". He stated the
roster sheet we copied from the back of the rules made bookkeeping less of a
task than he had feared. Afterwards we discussed our opinions about DBM vs.
Warrior. Fatigue was mentioned as an element that added some realism to the
feel of the game. The ability of LI and horse archers to shoot helped in this
area as well. It was mentioned that FW was a better introduction than DBA, the
latter being "too small". My friend who had not played 7th expressed some
disbelief in the numbers and effectiveness of handgunners after losing a HC unit
to them. We all agreed it was a slightly different way of thinking. Some of
our DBM tactics don't work in Warrior and we will be challenged to find better
ones. For me the suspension of disbelief that makes a game feel real seems a
little easier with Warrior game mechanics. DBM has other advantages. We
decided we all liked both for different reasons and will continue to play both.
regards,
Fred
