This sounds like how I do my bases, but really didn't want to do this for a
2' x 3' terrain board. On my bases, I apply a think layer of brown acrylic
paint and while it is wet dip it in a container of 'dirt' or 'sand' flocking.
Once the whole mess dries, I then spray down figures with acrylics to fix
everything and then apply a few splotches of grass and stones.
Now to a follow up question. I have a large contingent of Russ, Russians,
Pechenegs, Bulgars, and other steppe folk. I am considering doing the flip side
of my terrain board for a winter environment with a scattering of snow.
Anyone do much flocking for winter, and what material did you use?
Thanks again,
John Garlic.

Snow flocking would just be a question of using white and pale gray paints.

Johnny,
Go to www.miniwars.com and take a look at the work Dave Smith did with his
Early Germans and Teutonic Knights. You might send him a query about what he
does. Dave is the absolute authority when it comes to flocking.

Greetings John,
I have used streched out cotton balls or saw dust with a bit of white
wash on them depending on the scale.

I did a whole wintertable with modular blocks.
I decided that a wholly white table wouldn't look very good nor
realistic I went for an "first snow" effect.
First I did my normal flocking job - I mix sand, Woodpaperglue and
brown acrylic color to a quite fluid mix which I apply freely on the
boards. (Hills and such have been modeled onto the styrofoam before)
afterwards I apply some green flock, sawdust (for "brown grass")
natural sand (which works as highlight and saves another painting
session) and finally some static grass.
Then the whole thing must dry throughly (usually 2 or 3 days).
Now comes the tricky part - frosting. (use some tiles to practise
first...) Principally it's quite easy - take a spraycan of white color
(or an airbrush if have one) and spray across the whole scene from a
distance of about 50 to 70 cm. very gently - you must not cover the
terrain with white - there must be remaining enough to shine through.
It just should look frosted.
Finally I apply some patches of modelrailway snow freely across the
tiles. As I found that snow not really too convincing I enhanced it
with a material that is called "Glass Sugar" over here. It looks like
very fine glasssplinters, but is made of clear plastic.
If desired I can try to make a picture and pot it into the files section
cheers, Michael
