I was reading Mark Stone's post about his poor Khazars
(jews of the steppe). I understand his dilema, but
this industry tends to alter everything every few
years. When DBM first came out it was an all around
excellent little game, but then by v2, half the troops
couldn't kill the other half. Now the DBM army lists
have all changed *to promote fairness* and there is
virtually no difference except in cost between Bw(i)
and Bw(o). the game is so predictable as to be DBA
with subgenerals and second rank shooting.
I remember when the new 7th army lists came out, and
most people had grown so acustom to the NASAMW lists
that they refused to play anything else. I will admit
some of those NASAMW lists were WILD historical
interps. I wrote one for ancient Vulcans, but no one
would publish it :)
Anyway, something I've noticed in FW. Close order
foot now can get into combat. My vast 7th experience
was that buying any close order was a waste, as by
time it got near the combat the flanks were gone and
the war was over. I've been playing the various
Norman derivitive lists now for about a month and
alway *always* rely upon the close order for victory.
I can see how the dynamic of FW has caused this shift
(smaller table/less optioinal troops). although I've
not had to fight a big shooting army like Aztecs, I
feel that the 1st crusader list would be able to at
least give a decent fight now....err did I mention my
bowmen have JLS, and my CB have shields. :)
I'd suggest the Khazar become Turks ;D

>Sounds like a 15mm player to me:) In 25mm, close order foot rules,
except against Spanish loose order foot, or knights, or elephants, etc.
But they *do* get into combat whether you want them to or not.

>Again, if you want close order foot in the game, play 25mm, if you want
cav armies, more room to move, 15mm is the way to go. Both games, at
1200-1600 points, provide a way different dynamic.

This is, of course, due to the artificialities of table size. If you want a
25mm 'cav game' - play on a larger table, etc. Nothing about 14.0 says you HAVE
to play on those table sizes.

>Absolutely. Look at what we're gonna try at Historicon: the Mini is
gonna be played on "regular" table sizes. Man, my Burgundians would
look even teeenier in 15mm on a 6x4 table:) :)
