ROMEC XIII / 2001 - VINDONISSA
International Roman Military Equipment Conference in
Vindonissa/Brugg (CH)
4. – 6. October 2001
"Römisches Militär und Militaria im zivilen Umfeld"
"Roman Military Equipment in civilian context"
"L'equipement militaire en contexte civil"
Vindonissa, Autumn 2000
First circular and pre-registration
The 13. Roman Military Equipment Conference (ROMEC) will be held at Brugg /
Vindonissa, Switzerland from October 4 to 6, 2001. The congress centre will
be in close vicinity to the only legionary fortress in modern Switzerland.
The general topic of the conference will be:
"Roman military equipment in civilian context"
Over the last years archaeological research has shown that Roman military
equipment can be found not only in military but also in civilian contexts.
How are such findings to be interpreted? Do they reveal military posts for
the control of civilian life? Are they clues towards combat or army
movements? Did they once belong to veterans who had retired to civilian
settlements? Or do the come from workshops that manufactured or repaired such
equipment?
ROMEC XIII aims to discuss such questions in a number of selected general
lectures on the subject, as well as in a series of case studies during the
first two days of the congress (October 4 and 5). Naturally, the second part
of the congress, on October 6, will be open for the presentation of the
latest results in Roman military equipment research. The presentation of
posters for this section is particularly welcomed.
Those interested should please fill in the attached form and send it to the
organising secretariat by December 31. 2000. Registrations by e-mail are
welcome.
In order to keep our costs as low as possible, only those who send in a
pre-registration will receive further information.
Information on ROMEC XIII, as well as registration forms are also available
on the internet:
