these pike units as 4 elements of frontage, for instance, which is what they
cover 2-deep. If my army covers less than about 30 elements of frontage and
it's not a mounted manouvre army, I'm in trouble.]

The above quote is from Ewan's article on army lists, and I feel it is so good
as to receive all the extra emphasis it can get. I think the issue of how much
frontage an army covers as you are designing one is often overlooked.
