It ain't imperceptible if you climb it.
>Good point. When I was attending USMC Command & Staff College, we did a staff
ride at Gettyburgh. I think it was Sickles who moved some Union corps seemingly
way the hell out in front of the lines on Cemetary Ridge on Day 2. Well, you
walk it and there is a rise precisely where he deployed the corps. The
rationale in a pre-mechanized combat world was that these seemingly
imperceptible rises turned out to be quite important in battles and Sickles
apparently seized on this as being important. I'm sure I'm hosing up the
details here since it's been, yikes, 7 years since I was at C&SC but I remember
the discussion about terrain very well and how the modern perception of what is
"steep" differs greatly from even 150 years ago, at least in terms of tactical
deployment. A very interesting and educational experience from a period I care
little about.

Speaking of Hastings, there is a very cool, interactive demo game of
a Hastings-like battle on the Saga Web site, featuring Normans
versus English. The flash-graphics are super.
