Is the template for Byzantine cavalry that they will be split with
front rankers carrying lances and rear rankers with bow?

I'm just working through combat between Byz and Arab horse in my head.

The Byzantines can't skirmish -- hence evade. But in theory the
Byzantines can counter and retire to perhaps frustrate the Arab
charge.

If the two sides approach: (Assuming 2E each) Byz prep shoot. (3 at
+4)If the Byz roll up 2 they can inflict 3CPF and disorder. Otherwise
2CPF or less. (Byzantine wants to be sure to get to 80p on
approaches.)

The Arabs charge unprompted and impetuous. Byzantine counter charge.
(Or charge nonimpetuous during declarations.)

Byzantine support shoot (3 at +2). 1 CPF unless they roll up 3.

Hand-to-hand goes:

Arabs 5 figures at (4+2+1-1)6 = 25 before dice.
Byzantines 3 figures at (4+1)5 = 12 before dice.

Byzantines break rout, but if they go up or Arabs down that situation
is avoided. Assume Byz roll up 1 and Arabs roll even.

Byzantines recoil disordered, 4 CPF + 2 CPF for charge. (6)

Arabs follow-up disordered, 2 CPF prep fire + 3 CPF for combat + 3
CPF for impetuous charge. (8)

Subsequent bound.

Arabs get +1 for following up, but fight as tired and disordered.
They only count as 3 figures as other cavalry.

Byzantines fight tired and disordered. Byzantine can support shoot,
but start out -2 for tired, -2 for disordered -2 for in contact. Need
to roll up 4 to do 1 CPF.

Arabs can do 1 CPF per bound by rolling even. Byzantines need to roll
up to inflict a CPF.

Something will likely intervene before either is exhausted, but the
Arab horse seems to have a pretty good advantage on its Byzantine
counter part.

6 Irr B HC,L,Sh + 1 Irr CMF = 79 points.
6 Reg B HC, 1/2 L,Sh 1/2 B + 1 Reg CMF = 70 points.

If we make the front rank Byzantine EHC the points are nearly even
and the Byzantines fight on just about equal terms with the Arabs
after the first bound ... assuming they don't break the first bound.

Does all of this seem like accurate reading and interpretation?

I appreciate the help.

John

Scott is the list guy. BUT he and I have talked on this issue. He'll give you
the detailed answer, but one thing I can tell you is that there will not be any
1/2 L, 1/2 B bodies in any list in Warrior. We will replicate historical troop
types that mixed L and B some other way.

J

>No. HC will be either L,B, Sh or L, Sh. LC will be LC B, Sh.
