This is true. Perhaps those of you planning on playing in the Roman theme
might post armies here.
And there should be many more theme events than we currently see.....

I've been following the discussion of various troop types and what is
good, what is not good, why, how, and when.... :-)
I'd like to point out that my first army, back in the old days when we
had to walk uphill both ways in the snow just to attend a tournament,
I played Normans. I was pretty good with them. Good enough to
qualify for the NCT (as it was known back then) three years running
with the army.
I did finish dead last in the NICT all three years. :-(
But, that is part of the story.
HC might not be the best shock troop. It might not win the NICT. JLS
armed MI might not be the best infantry and it too might not win the
NICT.
But, I did beat Derek Downs with the Normans to win one of my two
theme tournament titles.
And, that, I think, is where I want to make my point.
Some of the troops that have been dismissed in discussions of how to
build the best armies actually do very well in the theme events. And,
if you use them often enough they actually do fairly well in open
tournaments as well.
Again, back in those olden days of yester year, I ran Early
Carthaginian. I was more than moderately successful with them even
though the army does not contain a single troop type that most people
find to be good. I won a theme tournament and place second in a NCT.
My success was so good that at Cold Wars, my first Warrior tournament
in the new era, my reputation with the Early Carthaginians was still
being recounted by folk.
While the advice here has been very good, I just wanted to encourage
folks to not miss out on the chance to run armies that don't fit into
the mold. Many times overlooked troop types are more than adequate to
win with and a lot more capable than people give them credit for.
Oh, and when you fight Ewan or Tim Brown or Chris Damour or Dave or
Derek then don't be surprised to lose. I have fought Tim a half dozen
times and never won. Same with Ewan. These guys are just good and no
matter what troops you have on the table they are still just good. I
think I've beaten Derek only that one time. And, I taught Chris to
play, so it goes without saying what my results against him have been.
:-(
