47 different players in 80 tourney slots.

Many thanks to Todd Kaeser for umping the 3rd round of the Theme and for Ed
Bernhard for playing Bill Low's third round slot in the Theme so that the two of
us could go get massacred in some dark German forest by the evil Romans as led
by the boys from On Military Matters. Next year: Cage Match.

Many thanks to Shawn Blevin and Jon Becker for offering to float in the Theme.
I didn't have to use them but guys, I *really* appreciate the offer. Every
other player in your respective event should thank you as well because it means
no byes.

Sportsman: Mike Byrne
Other Sportsman nominees: Charles Yaw, Jamie Gentry, Lenny Hermann, Mike Bard,
Tim Grimmett.

We didn't do Best Camp, Terrain, Armies per se. There was an NASAMW event in
this which some people participated. We're gonna do something different next
year with possibly just me and Darrell Smith doing the judging with emphasis on
the theme games. This is way unthought out yet so don't quote me on anything.
This year, as always, I went around to all the Warrior events over the three
days and noted armies and camps worth mentioning in terms of eye-candy.

Camps:
Mike Mallamaci, 25mm for his Nikephorian Byzantines
Charles Yaw, 25mm for his Sassanid Persians
John Becker, 15mm for his Holy Roman Imperial and 25mm for his EIR
Mike Bard, 25mm for his Syracusans (I'd seen it at Cold Wars as well).

Armies:
Rich Kroupa, 25mm LIR AND 25mm Sicilian Hohenstaufen
Mike Mallamaci, 25mm Nikephorian Byzantine
Todd Kaeser, 25mm Alexander Imperial (Rob Turnball's army)

Rob also gets the 'Screwed by dice' award, at least from me. Charge
in SHC subgeneral against EHC, looking good - die in a catastrophe.
Oops. OK, next bound, charge in SHC CinC against more EHC. You
guessed it, die in a second catastrophe.

Seems like Tim should have received a best Roman award, too. He must
have been really tired of fighting Sassanids!

That's an impressive performance from the Irish. And the Assyrians,
really, but especially the Irish Smile.

[blush] Than you!

Sadly, my camp isn't finished yet... I'm going to rebase the sacrifice and
the Lost Altar of the Up Three on single wooden bases with bevelled edges,
and replace the temporary fill in with single element Spartan and Athenian
camps (Spartan Camp: fire, sleeping Spartans; Athenian Camp: Hetairi and
drunken hoplites...)

Again thank you.

Note: I have (sort of) got over my annoyance with the NASAMW's (or
whoever's) painting contest which gave me the choice of either entering the
painting contest, OR playing in the open on Saturday. Fortunately for next
year I should have enough hoplites painted that I can start the Grand
Rotation (minimum size for contest Athenian Army in 2005, minimum size for
contest Spartan Army in 2006, minimum size for contest Syracusan army for
2007, minimum size for contest pre-424BCE Spartan army for 2008, etc. I
won't use the same figurse of course...).

One small embarassment I had was the lack of pretty Warrior tropheys
compared to all the pretty painted figure tropheys for DBM/DBA. If somebody
can get me the figures, and some instructions as to how to paint them
historically accurately, I have no problem with painting figures for OUR
pretty tropheys!

I'm still relearning the game and now know (I think) what to do. Against
SHK armies have blocks of hoplites wit a second punch unit (hoplites,
barbarians) for the second bound when the knights are pinned; against
elephant armies hide the cavalry in the back and keep an eye for an
opportunity to dash along one flank and go camp hunting (and make sure the
put the artillery on the CORRECT side!); and REMEMBER HOW BRUSH WORKS!! (It
is NOT forest!). :)

Congratulations Ewan. Glad I could help out on the figure side.

For Warrior, there *will* be a prize for best army and best camp next year
starting with Cold Wars and you won't have to choose between entering it and
playing it. That was a screw-up but it *will* be fixed. the best painted army
judge will walk through games in progress to make his determination. I am sorry
that NASAMW got this fouled up this year, but I may not have been as clear as I
needed to be to get what we wanted.

Actually Warrior had those as well. Mike, the night we announced awards, there
were still tourneys with finals the next day.  Also, having both kinds of prizes
at home, the painted figure ones are very nice, but damned hard to keep from
getting smashed when transporting moving or having in a day-to-day household.
having said that, we need to canvass the players again as to what they want.
The plaques with the picture on them were also very nice.

Now *that* might make one change his mind..lol How about a 90mm fig? lol

Are we really ready for the first wargame depiction of a homosexual kiss?

I knew that in some context, sooner or later, this was bound to come up.
All the business about ancient Greek homosexuality is overdone. It was no
more prevalent there than in any other ancient Mediterranean civilization,
and the original texts concerning mentorship (love) of young men in the
gymnasia by elders are: 1. not definitive, as they are not explicit and
could be interpreted platonically (no pun intended). E.g., most people who
read in the Bible that David loved Jonathan, do not jump to the conclusion
that this was somehow erotic. Why do we assume otherwise when reading very
similar statements that Alexander "loved" Hephaeston? 2. limited to Sparta
and to the upper effete classes in Athens. Homosexuality was considered
unusual (or even Persian or Oriental) everywhere else in Greece, including
among the middle and lower classes in Athens, and particularly in the
countryside.

I have no problem with painting 90mm figures. As it is, I'm still trying to
find a large scale hoplite that I like to test the powdered bronze method of
bronze armour. I've got one, but the shield is too small and I haven't had
any luck figuring out how to replace it.

Anyway, if you need somebody, consider me volunteered.
