This year's winner was Dave Markowitz, running Alexandrian Imperial. I believe
this is Dave's fourth time as champion, between WRG7 and Warrior. Dave is that
rare blend of extremely good player and extremely good sport, so it's hard to
feel too bad about having him as our champion.

I didn't keep exact track of where everyone stood, as I failed to make the
Thursday cut and played in the Open instead on Saturday, but coming out of the
last round it seemed to me that any of the following might have been declared
champion:
Dave, Alexandrian Imperial
Derek Downs, 10 Independent States
Frank Gilson, Alexandrian Imperial
Robert Turnball, Seleucid

Derek finished second; not sure what the final standings were otherwise. And it
was highly amusing to see Derek show up with the same army I had, configured
almost exactly the same. And here I thought I had found the perfect "stealth
army", that no one else would bring along and that opponents would not have
thought about. More on that, perhaps, in another email.

Winner of the hard luck award has to go to Ewan McNay. Ewan had a very close
fought battle with Frank Gilson on Saturday morning, and came out on top, but
only 2-1. That seemed like it might take both of them out of contention. In the
next round, Ewan drew Dave Markowitz, and seemed to have the upper hand until
his general was killed in a catastrophe on the last bound, thus handing victory
to Dave.

More when I have more time, and perhaps more sleep (just got home about 3 hours
ago).

Completely true, on all counts.

Thanks, I guess, Mark Smile.

Frank and I were the only two to enter Sat with 10 raw points, so the 2-1
- while disappointing - was not that big a problem; it put me in second
behind Dave. Dave was the third Alex Imp I faced in four NICT games,
which was a little distressing for an army with no way to kill either pike
or the new-and-improved Hypaspists! And yes, the game against Dave was
2-1 (I think) to me also until that last die roll, but I knew I could not
afford a *second* small win, and charging an IrrB SHC general into
Hypaspists - well, the 1/36 chance of dieing was the same as the chance of
rolling +4 and getting an enemy rout (actually, much better odds: there
are many more combinations where he routs!).

So, I wuz robbed. Boohoo Smile. Long and boring report when I have more
time, doubtless. [I should have predicted the dominance of pike given the
theme. Thurs through Sat, my first seven games were against four Alex
Imp, a Seleucid, an Asiatic Early Successor, and a (highly testicular)
Gaul. So no complaints about the catastrophe, but one or two about the
number of pike I faced Smile.

Another year, another NICT I didn't win. More important, though:
congrats, Dave, and you owe me for that die roll... :)
