I do agree, the justification that "that is the way we always did it" does not qualify as a good reason.  I have always heard that foot received impetuous charge at a halt because "that is what they did historically"  And that may be true.  But the game system does not offer any advantages for doing so.  In rev 6, moving foot contacted by mounted was a cause of disorder, THAT was a good reason not to counter charge mounted.  But at one time steady frontal pike was the one thing you did not want to fight.  Now it has been reduced to the roll of steady troops.  Then came (not necessaryily in this order):
      Impetuous foot charges
      Wedge

Not-wedge-or-long-weapons-or-even-throwing-weapons-but-they-fight-extra-figure

s-anyway.
      LTS.

Each of these improved their weapons system, and incrementally degregraded the pike system.  The pike system only really lost wars when the nation failed to keep up the manpower required to keep the pike blocks flanks cleared or they fought on terrain that would not support the formation.
