Jon,
when a unit capable of doing so interpenatrates a friend, do both units have
to be facing in the same direction? Can the interpenatrating unit face
north, and the unit it interpenatrates through be facing East (or west/South
for that matter)?

No, they can be facing any direction. Yes.
