Cancon 2005
2nd Australian 15mm Warrior Championships
There were 18 competitors playing 6 x 3˝ hour games over 3 days with
armies of 1650 points on 6'x4' tables. A great competition as always
and played by a group of players who understand that while winning
is great the whole point is to enjoy playing the game with a fair
and reasonable opponent. Paul Koschell umpired and did this
thankless ob really well and the dog work of getting everything laid
out was done by that tireless worker Dave Lawrence.
The results were as follows
1. Darren Holmes Sassanid Persian 23 points
2. Mike Morgan Early Achaemenid Persian 22
3. Paul Collins Komnenan Byzantine 19
4. Greg Preston Medieval Spanish 17
5. Brad Leonard Late Imperial Roman(East) 17
6. Adrian Williams Bactrian Gree 17
7. Michael Geld Alexandrian Macedonian 16
8. Guy Sheppard Later Ottoman Turk 16
9. Mark Ball Early Polish 15
10.Ian Poade Nikephorian Byzantine 14
11.Barry Hayes Magyar 14
12.David Lawrence Pre-Feudal Scott 13
13.Reg Poulton Sassanid Persian 13
14.John Harris Later Hoplite Greek 12
15.Steve Honeyman Tibetan 11
16.John Ball Bedouin Tribes 10

My Campaign

CinC IrB 1E 2hLCh + 1E HC JLS,B,Sh+PA
Immortals RA 6E HI JLS,B,Sh
2 x Persian Inf IrC 3E HI + 3E MI JLS,B,Sh
Persian Cav IrB 2E HC JLS,B,Sh
Bactrian Cav IrC 6E LC JLS,B
Libyan Chariots IrC 2E 4hLCh JLS
Ethiopian Inf IrC 6E LI JLS,B
East Ethiopian Inf IrC 4E LI B,Sh
Sub RA 2E HC JLSB,Sh
Persian Cav IrB 2E HC JLS,B,Sh
Phoenician Marines IrC 7E LMI JLS,Sh
Skythian Cav IrC 6E LC B
Mysian Inf IrC 4E LI JLS,Sh
Sub IrB 2E HC JLSB,Sh
Skythian Cav IrC 4E LC B
Indian Inf IrC 6E LI LB,2HCW
Game 1 v Bedouin Tribes
Wall To Wall Camels and Light infantry!
The might of Persian pushed forward with the bactrians and Libyans
seeking out light infantry, the Persian infantry and Immortals
pushing towards the centre and the Phoenician marines advancing up
the right side. The Irregular Sub was sent on a right hand side
flank march.. A storm of arrows blotted out the sky and was leading
to a bloody stalemate until the Arabs neglected to put one of 2
flanking 6E Double rider camel units into skirmisher and were stuck
by the Phoenicians in an impetuous charge. The Marines made short
work of the camels and the surrounding units shook from the ensuing
wavers tests. The next bound (5) the flank march arrived and all
that the arabs had to counter them were their 2E General MCm units.
These were shot to disorder by the arriving Persians and then
dispatched by charges. In the next bound the immortals charged a
camel unit and broke it the rest was academic with the Mysian
Infantry, Libyan Chariots and a Persian infantry unit at last
buckling under to pressure of archery and fighting 12E LI units.
Result 5-2 to me
Game 2 v Late Roman
This roman had lots of legionaries and some small 2E and 4E LC and
3x 2E HC units the game really revolved on my right flank holding
force getting lucky when the East Ethiopians were charged in the
flank by some light cavalry and survived to be pushed back allowing
my Persian Cav unit to charge them in the flank. 2nd round of combat
saw the LI routing with the 3rd round seeing the LC routing. The
ensuing waiver test saw a legionary unit shake and then subsequently
break and a 2nd legion shake the rot had set in for the Romans.
The result 4-1 to me
Game 3 v Nikephorian Byzantine
Here I was just outclassed with Ian crushing my flank units and me
just managing to dispatch a couple of light infantry units. The real
crux of the battle came when the Phoenicians and a Russ Unit
collided impetuously I rolled +1 to give 14@8 while Ian rolled +2 to
give 16@8 which led to a major problem with his 40 figures against
my counting as 20. An impetuous charge by a Persian infantry unit
could not save the marines and the following bound they were
destroyed.
The result 4-1 to Ian
Game 4 v Ottoman Turk
This game was one where the light troops were given the job of
holding off the Turkish cavalry while I manoeuvred around the flank
where once again I had sent the irregular general on a flank march.
The key to the battle occurred when the flank march came on catching
some LC who had evaded and this ensuing rout led to his Serbian ally
general shaking and being charged with a few desperate attempts to
save him coming unstuck as the Persian infantry moved up to first
support shoot at shieldless MI and then charge them to finish the
job demoralisation of the Serbian ally's command followed and again
led to a Persian victory at the expense of a few subject races.
The result 5 -1 to me
Game 5 v Early Polish
Knights and long spear/bow! The light troops were sent off to the
right as a holding force and the main strike troops of chariots, HC
the close and loose formation infantry were sent to turn his right
the regular general went rash and read to rush which led to 3 units
having to charge 1 single LC unit! One unit of HC caught them and
routed them but this then left them vulnerable to his knights! The
key was when I lost the initiative and was able the manoeuvre the
Reg HC onto the flank of his SHK/EHK sub general who otherwise have
used my other HC, constrained to charging them frontally due to rush
orders, as a speed bump. The inevitable impetuous but tired charges
led to the knights routing and with a few assorted Polish light
cavalry units being taken out it was a resounding victory.
Te result 5 – 0 to me.
Game 6 v Sassanid Persian
The deciding game with the winner most likely being the competition
winner. Darren is a general who always gets stuck in but is usually
clever enough to turn most situations to his advantage this was no
exception. There was blood and carnage all over the battle field.
The major highlights were the Phoenicians who were charged by 3E of
elephants and due to the ebb and flow of the flank action were
uneasy due to the elephants and enemy behind flank despite being
supported and the army standard moving up. The charge was declared
and the test taken… a 3! They became so much pachyderm toe jam. For
me the heroes were the Immortals who broke some pursuing HC,
countered, turned around shot at the elephants to halt them, got
charged in the flank by LC, countered, turned and routed them,
countered, turned and shot at the elephants to halt them again and
were charged again in the flank by LI. Both camps were looted and
when the dust settled Persia was clearly Sassanian
The result 5-3 to Darren
The final result was a 2nd place result overall to me and 1st to
Darren by just one point! Talk about down to the wire. It has just
wet my appetite for the next competition.
Sorry this has been long, hope you found it interesting
Mike
