Actually, I have been giving some thought to this for
awhile (A byproduct of the Fanatsy Lists I am also
working on), and believe that in most cases, there are
more than a few "Abilities" out there that could apply
across the board to several leaders.
From a poorly written scratched out list:
Inspirational. Which takes a couple of forms.
Units can gain morale bonus's, waver test bonus's
(and/or penalties), troop status bonus's (Like
Alexander and eagerness).
Possible training bonus's.
The ability to communicate orders faster,
interpretation bonus's. Ability to counter better.
All Sub Generals are automatically Bold/rash.
Those are the few ideas I had. What else eould others
be?

Interesting ideas. How about variable effects on the death of a
general? There are some battles where the death of a general caused
his troops to go beserk, ie it's not always a bad thing! If you
really wanted to get into it, you could bring back the 6th edn rules
for challenges between generals, and rate a general's individual
fighting ability. Then you could also rate a general's initiative,
drinking habits, laziness, decisveness (these would speed up or slow
down orders transmission), popularity (eg Lysimachus has downgraded
troops because he got some bad press/treated some troops badly), hated
enemy (if the general fights a particular general or nationality he
fights better), ability as a cavalry general or in difficult terrain
etc but if you have this much detail you might as well play Warhammer
Ancients!

I never played 6th edition, the current ruleset is the
only version I've played, but I've read many of the
other editions.
At one point I had in minda mechanic where if a
bodyguard unit passed its waver test for seeing a
general break/rout/die, they fought better for "X"
rounds.
