Ewan,
Hope this was either a pun on your part or a friendly jab;-) You do
know that Bill attended Harvard and graduated Summa, right? He
puts a lot of us to shame, present company excepted of course
Don't let his seemingly benign questions fool you, Bill is a brilliant
man and Warrior player. He can't seem to get past playing these greek
armies tho.... LOL Now, if he fields Greek Byzantines and can get
the 'hang' of cavalry, we will all be asking him tactics questions! :-)

Yes. Of course it was. Ewan and I have been doing the East Coast
version of the Texas v. Texas A&M thing for quite some time now
We have even spoken of doing an exhibition match in tuxes or
graduation gowns, and if I am eliminated as quickly from the NICT
this year as I expect, and if he is somehow unlucky, we might get to
do it!
You do

You credit me too much, Chris. I have never been summa at anything.
But thanks for the kudos. You are quite right about my playing
style. I am scared of little metal horses. They always get me in
trouble on the tabletop.

I thought that the latest iteration was me in kilt w/ Scots vs. you in
chiton with the Greeks? But anything that gets me a better return on
investment on that silly graduation hat is a good thing.
I just put the NICT into ink on the calendar. Who needs tenure anyway?

Could be worse - biomed science-stuff basically mandates, these days, at
least four years or so of postdoc penury before one can be considered for
a real job. I got lucky and managed to at least get some grants to make
it less penurious.

Me too. However, I am behind you on the tenure track. I just accepted a
doctoral fellowship in History at UT Austin because it has become apparent
that I must get the mytho-magical Ph.D. to get a real academic job, and
that four other graduate degrees will not be enough.

Wow. it is nough to make one wonder why we are doing this. In my case, at
least History allows me some legitimate excuse to paint toy soldiers!
Perhaps we will meet in the NICT. The Yale scientist vs. the Harvard
liberal arts guy.

<DS> Greek, is it true that they refer to Harvard as the Kansas State
of the East? Just curious.

I think Berkeley is accurately termed the UVa of the West; but Harvard is
I believe commonly referred to as 'that colonial institution in the other
Cambridge.'

This is cracking me up. Relating to this thread, CU (Univ of
Colorado, Boulder) is referred to as "Berkeley of the Rockies" or
it's more accurate name, SkiU.
And I think we've had a Yale vs Harvard game before in Warrior if
Bill Low and Ewan have met at one time or another.
And remember, All Dirt Roads Lead To Tech.

Oh, a time or two .
Back in the UK, I used to play both wargaming (yes, that was a recognised
team sport!) and bridge for the university of Sheffield. We took great
pride in making Oxford or Cambridge drag their noble selves up to
Yorkshire to get beaten .

Yep, it's the same in my area (population genetics). If you
want to teach in a small university/college you can sometimes get away
with a couple of years of postdoctoral work and 2-3 more years of
temporary/adjunct teaching (at slave wages). Of course if you want to go
for a research one institution you can do the 4 years of postdoctoral
work and forget about all of that teaching crap....it's just a
distraction from the important stuff anyway right .
Paul Wilson
P.S. I'm a product of Washington University the "Harvard of the
Midwest". Of course if you Google "Harvard of the Midwest" you get more
than 500 hits that include just about every university in the Midwest so
make of that what you will :-)

These are all excellent suggestions. Now I know why Bill Low and I get
along so well I should have figured that one out before. To actually
answer the original question, I believe it was Ann Arbor that started all
this. The first t-shirt of this ilk that I remember seeing was worn by my
Roman law professor, Charles Donahue, and it read: 'Harvard, Michigan of
the East.' From my perspective, of course, it is the Texas of the East
(with a somewhat less prestigious athletics program).

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. Please end the thread on universities or take it
elsewhere. Thanks for your support!
