So, my son Alex (he's 12) will be playing in the 15mm Open at Historicon. Be
kind to him guys; it's his third tourney ever, and only his second playing on
his own. Anyway, as part of his preparation I told him it was time for him to
take a stab at writing his own list, rather than just using what I hand to him.

I showed him what I take to be the basics, and left him on his own. He came back
a while later, having done reasonably well for a first try. I asked him if he
really wanted his CinC on just a staff element. He immediately replied, "No, he
comes with two other elements. See, it says CinC plus 2 Irr B...."

Now to me, and no doubt just about everyone on this list, it's obvious that that
refers to 2 _figures_, not 2 stands. It wasn't at all obvious to Alex, though.
Every other number on the list is expressed in terms of number of stands, so he
simply assumed that this referred to number of stands as well.

Not so sure should be done about this, as this notation is in _every_ single
list. Perhaps nothing; if you read the rules you can reason out that this must
be number of figures, or the points don't add up. Perhaps something under
"General Notes" in the beginning. Regardless, it was an interersting excercise
for me in what I take for granted that an outsider does not.

Greetings Mark,
That is a wisdom of the ages moment. It is something that we as
experienced players will totaly miss. Every time we get new players
playing and reading and understanding the rules as they read them the
older player gets a lesson in how to better show the game to new
players. Good luck to Alex, and to you aswell.

Mark:

This exact thing happened to me when I was trying to put my first
lists together just over a year ago. It was not obvious at all to me
from the rules. I found out my error only when reading list put out by
other players and from actually playing the game with lists prepared
for me.

Although I soon figured this out, I agree, it should be more obviously
described in the general notes, or at least somewhere.
