twenty years ago, Ral Partha had a line of fantasy 15's
which we used and also adapted some of the stuff from
Superior -- both lines now defunct, I'd guess, however ...
We found that since Tolkien was using rough ideas about
other cultures as templates for his own work we found
several ranges could be easily substituted. Early Arab,
Mongol, Turk, and Orientals worked well for much of the
Orcs. The various human armies could usually be modeled by
Medieval ranges -- there was a Teutonic Knights series which
was great! For Rohan, some guys liked Norman figures and
others liked the late Roman Imperials (there was a Goth line
for a bit, but I never got any of them myself, <sigh>)
I fielded a woods elf army which actually was differently
painted early 100 years War English.
Then again, the old Robin Hood set was equally adaptable
