First of all let me thank Jon Cleaves for his hospitality. He was a great
host and I really enjoyed the trip up and the weekend. It was a great weekend
and I really enjoyed the camaraderie and the gaming. I'd also like to thank
Charles - great job organzin' and keepin' things moving along. The only real
regret is that I only got to play against 5 people. So many potential games, so
I’ll just have to go back to KC sometime since I really enjoyed two-wheelin’
J I love my chariots, but they really got pounded!
Before I go to AAR, let me share my list. I used the NASAMW Han Chinese List

My first game was against Mike Lewis with his Late Berbers. I placed a
couple hills and 160p back from the center line for terrain which Mike promptly
covered with woods (so much for artillery positions). Other than these, there
were two brush areas just across the center off to my left. Since the center
and left were pretty cluttered, I decided to focus on whacking him on the right.
I sent Command 2 on a flank march which came in one bound three after
pushing his flank march back. The real battle occurred in the open to the right
of
center. My third command, which was off to the left contributed very little
since the cautious creep for a general downgraded his orders and was delayed
off the start line. Meanwhile, Mike’s rash general had three knight units
charge headlong into the conflict. My command I absorbed the blow and coupled
with
the fortuitous arrival of Command II, was able to hold the knights and send
them into retreat, unfortunately my losses were pretty high (especially LC) and
Mike got the win 3-2 (IIRC). The lesson I learned here, for tournament play,
is to watch the clock. I had a unit of HC L that had flank marched and in
what turned out to be the last bound, they had a choice between charging
Mike’s
camp, or fighting the Moogs lurking nearby which would’ve hit them in flank
the succeeding bound. Of course I chose the Moogs and there was no next bound J
My next game was against Charles Yaw and his Sassanids. I really enjoyed
this game. IIRC it was my 12th game of Warrior, and the first time I faced
elephants. This game was fought over a wide open field except for two hills
opposite one another on my left. This time I only flank marched one HCh unit
with
its detachment of LCh around to my left. Meanwhile, Charles flank marched an
entire command on the opposite side. They key point on the battlefield was on
the right where my Command I and Command II tried to hold off Charles very
strong attack with elephants and EHC. My Command II really took a pounding and
the 2inC was already in dire straights when the three unit flank march appeared
behind him. His command went into retreat shortly after he was crushed
beneath the elephant and EHC to the front and EHC to the rear. Although it was
a
1-5 loss, I enjoyed the game. I was very impressed by the elephants and the
idea of flank marching a unit of them appealed to me as well. Thanks for the
lesson Charles “Blood Bowl” Yaw!
We took a break for barbecue which I washed down with jalapeños to fuel up
for the evening.
Since there wasn’t a tournament round Saturday evening, Jon Cleaves and I set
up a game between my Han and his Marian Romans. I thought this would be
interesting since I really wanted to see some of the Roman rules in action. The
table was pretty hilly this go round with a wooded hill on my left on Jon’s
side, two steep hills dominating the back half of my central forward zone, and
two hills facing off at the center line on the right. Once again, I flanked
marched Command II while trying to make my artillery work in the center.
Unfortunately, the flank march arrived just in time to witness the demise of the
rest
of the army. Jon set up two ditched areas in the center of the board which
stalled action in that area. Meanwhile he launched two 2E elephant units on my
right over the hills and another on my left. I tried once again, despite Jon’
s advice, to do something against the elephants with my HCh. I had some
lucky die rolls which provided a delay, but the elephants then proceeded to
crush
my 4E chariot unit. Meanwhile on the other side the elephants made good
progress against my close order foot, which only held them up a bit because I
was
on the hill and Jon was rolling down. Meanwhile in the center I tried some
unsuccessful charges with lancers and chariots against Jon’s Romans. The
artillery proved to be more of an empty threat and I began to fail waivers as
Jon
continued to press. If it had been a tournament game it would’ve ended 5-0 in
Jon
’s favor since the only unit I shook was rallying as we called it a game.
Great game with lotsa good teachin’ and talkin' while we played.
Sunday we were up early for the third round of the tournament, and I’d like
to thank everyone for starting early on my behalf. I started the day facing
Paul Leuschen’s Swiss. We had a hill in the center of the table on my side
faced
by a brush. There was also a brush in each flank sector. I set up all of my
artillery on the hill about 120p back from the center line with two small LI
to their front and flank marched Command II around to my left. Paul basically
deployed all on my left except for ten (!) 2E LI which he force marched all
across the board. My intent was to pivot to the right around the hill in the
center with Command I while my Command III delayed in front of Paul’s main
attack. I figured Command I and Command II would basically catch him in an
anvil.
Command III basically bottled up his attack on the left, but lost its LC
when they got stuck to a routing LI and whacked in flank by some pike.
Meanwhile, Paul did an excellent job with delaying my attack on the right with
his
little LI units. My artillery actually got some decent shots in the game
against
his advancing pike blocks. The main fight happened with the arrival of my
Command II in bound two. It started well, but went downhill. The 2inC charged
onto the board and into the flank of one of Paul’s sub general pike blocks
which fortuitously failed its counter with a 1. That break was the only break I
got on that side as Paul turned his French knights to meet the threat. The
command’s LC were forced to evade off the board while one knight wedge charged
and slowly broke up my lancers. (Lesson: shieldless HC L do not do well
against SHK) Actually I knew that, but it was just a tough spot. Meanwhile the
2inC, fresh from smacking the pike general, took on the other SHK. They locked
into a slow attrition battle which lasted until the game ended. IIRC it was
2-2 with Paul having inflicted more points.
My last game was against Todd Schneider and his Araucanians. Man, those were
some serious bow-wielding dudes! There was a major water feature on my right
and the entire left half of the table was cluttered over with woods and
marsh. No flank marches this time. There was a small knoll on my side just to
the
right of center which I used for my artillery (two on it and one unit beside
it). I didn't know much about Araucanians (could barely spell it), but I
figured these New Worlders would be impressed by my 14 chariots and horses.
They
were decidedly nonplused. The first surprised was right at tee time when
Todd’
s entire army showed up force marched on the centerline. The action took off
very quick with my mounted barely denting his line due to all of the intense
missile fire. I did get a couple charges on some loose order, but only the LI
wavered. Todd wiped out my lancers which got exhausted after the broke off
from one of his MI units. By the time my charges hit home, they were always
down at least a couple from support shooting. I did shake one LMI unit with
artillery fire, but there were too many Indians (Custer) and they swarmed into
my
artillery and the waivers began and things turned south. It ended as a 2-1
victory for Todd.
I thoroughly enjoyed all of my games. Feel free to correct or add to my
recollections. I learned a lot and enjoyed the table talk as well. I still
love
two-wheelin,’ but I think my next army won’t have chariots. 40+ is enough
for anyone - although Kelly’s Assyrian figure offer was very tempting! Now
that
I’ve been introduced to elephants, who know what’s next!?!
Pondering Lead,
John Garlic

Howdy,
Did someone post the overall results somewhere? I'll be happy to add them
to the NASAMW site if it's so desired.

Jeff, the results were posted here in full - about ten-twelve messages back from
this one...
