What I really enjoy about battle reports like this, is the opportunity to see
other peoples lists and style of play.
Over the years, this has always been my favorite thing about this game, and its
previous incarnations of course. I believe it was three years ago or so that
Chris Bump and John Green started playing with us old SW Society guys. It was a
lot of fun seeing how they approached lists and battles, and I think they had
quite a bit of fun seeing our solutions for combat conditions. In our area,
almost everyone uses a second list that would be a wave of light cavalry, just
to deal with armies with things like IRR A, scythed chariots, etc ... I'm not
saying this is the best solution of course, it was just the solution we came up
with.
This sort of thing reminds me very much of a simulation of the evolution of
warfare on a small scale. When Chris and John started playing with us regularly,
I think they were very much bothered by armies we would put on the table that
would make them punch into a pillow, followed by a stiff counter attack. I'm not
sure they didn't look at our armies, and knowing we didn't have NASAMW
experience, think they had some easy prey. I'm not so sure we didn't look at
their armies and think the same thing. I think we both found out that playing
styles and army styles could play a major factor in games. The last few times
John and Chris have come to play, I have noticed a considerable mix of light
troops, and similar second lists. The flip side is also true. I can't think of a
single player around here that was using the "wall of infantry' tactic, before
we started playing with Chris and John. In all our years of play, we just never
came up with that sort of solution or tactic. It was quite the eye opener the
first time I trotted my 105 scouting point Comnenan Byzantine list out against
John with him having five 32 figure pike units and good moral Regular LMI. Not
good for the Byzantines, without a doubt. I find myself using much more infantry
than I ever considered before, based on games against players like Chris and
John with drastically different styles than we were used to.
Please post more battle reports, everyone. I can't get enough of this stuff!
Greg
P.S. Sorry if this is long, but this is fascinating to me.

I am a big fan of battle reports both in games and in history (go
Caesar! go Ewan!). The battle report can be an excellent vehicle
for conveying a lot of useful tactical information as well. The
more insight into what the commander did and why, and what worked
and didn't, the better. Maps, lists, list analysis, description,
etc. - Ewan has put a lot into his thoughtful and informative posts.
Please just include "AAR" in the title so I can make sure to read it
and Scott delete it.
Thanks,
Mike

well not a battle report as such but may be of interest. one of my long
suffering opponents has run sassanids for some years.
recently with the new list he took on new kingdom egyptian.
here in the UK we play to a finish normally - 6 hours often. in this case the
sassanids were on the losing end of it after 6 hours but the egyptian player
agreed a draw.
from what i can remember the large spear blocks of the sassanids were kept from
melee by the egyptian player for as long as possible and the sassanid elephants
were shot up and beaten. almost all the sassanid support troops were beaten up
by the chariots and LMI jls.

ps i was umpire/watching/advising on rules etc mostly
