Looking at 1st Crusade list, and using the ideas of Greg/Kelly/Mark
in as much a synthisis as possible, I have developed the following
idea for my Frank foot.
First I have to take the following troops:
12 IrgC MI JLS/sh (up to 1/3 can be LTS, 1/2 can be HI)
4 IrgC MI B (can have JLS)
2 IrgC MI CB
I'm working the idea of mixing them together. The two ideas I like
most are a 6E unit of 2 element frontage with 2 each of HI JLS/MI
JLS/MI B with the B downgraded to IrgD. This gives me a 20 factor
which is safe from taking 2 CPF until you get into the 12@5 and 20@3
shooting factor range (generally not specifically). This keeps them
moving forward with a narrower footprint, thus more able to deveate
from straight ahead and cope with enemy manuvers. The also get a
support shot of 4@ with an impetouos charge of 12@ still taking
damage as a 20 fig unit. They are weak in staying power in HTH, but
they will do nice in pushing shooters, forcing shooters to shoot at
them, and generally creating a presence that needs to be delt with.
At issue is that they will attract enemy baddies like EL, Hch and SHK
that will rout them back through my waiting HK. The HK cannot deal
with any of these threats efffectively, so some other form of
protection from the badass shock troops.
Second idea is based upon a 12E unit of 8 HI/MI JLS/sh with 4 MI B in
a third rank. This means they take damage as a 40 man unit. No
shooting below 20@5 is a worry. They are just one solid mobile
missile absorbtion unit. The downside is that they will only move
straight forward, they can be hit by up to 4 separate units in
echelon (bounds), and they still are not going to like being hit
standing still by EL, Hch, or SHK.
One alternate idea I'm considering but am not sure is worth it in the
long run is 8E units of 2 ranks. First rank MI JLS, second rank MI B
JLS. This give the bow full effect shooting, and it can add the
second rank JLS in HTH provided I forgo the support shot. The
support shot could be substantial but without a second rank of JLS
this unit will become disordered on contact with almost any tangeble
foe.
The CB are a question. In the rules it states that they can
fire "over one such rank at full effect", but it doesn't really
indicate if this means one rank in the unit of any kind or one other
CB rank. If the second, then the CB are worthless and will guard the
camp as a 2E MI CB unit :)
Otherwise the CB must be in the second rank to shoot over the HI/MI
JLS, but they don't also get the JLS so will offer nothing in the way
of HTH and will ultimately not be a possitive method of employment.
Any thoughts on the above ideas?
