Rules as in Warrior
6.111 Reads. A tactical move can also include the following WITHOUT
any reduction in move distance
Last line reads
Reverting from any formation (6.4) but orb to block of similar
frontage.
6.4 Reads. FORMATIONS Units may be in one of 5 formations block,
column, testudo, orb or skirmish. Changing from one formation to
another is a manouver(6.12 but see 6.111)
6.12 Reads MANOUVERS An approach, Counter, retirement or staff move
can include the following manouvers
One of which Reads (CHANGE IN FORMATION) Form testudo, skirmish, or
orb, or revert to block from orb.
Irregular or unsteady troops may make only one maneuver, and are then
limited to 40 paces of movement.
FINALLY to the point !!!!
1. Irregulars can change from column to block for free and still move
the FULL distance. Am I right ?
2. Therefore an Irregular unit changing from column to block or visa
versa means that the unit makes a 90 degree change for free in effect?
Am I right ?

No. A column is a block. 6.42.

No. See above.

If that's the case then 6.111 last sentence is pointless as it's NOT
true??? as it's not for free is it.
I'm trying to find out why it's there

6.111 is hardly pointless. It lets you revert from testudo or skirmish to block
'for free' as long as that reversion is into a block of the same frontage.
'Reverting' from a column to a block (which is what you asked about) using 6.111
is nonsensical for two reasons. 1. A column is a block, just a particular kind
of block, so you aren't reverting from anything into anything. 2. That part of
6.111 is about a reversion where you keep the same frontage, so since a column
is a block one wide, what kind of block would you revert a column into? The
same column, of course....lol

That is not reverting to a block, but what you describe is possible.

jon you may confuse my opponent here - surely the irregulars only have a 40
pace move - please clarify.

You are correct that the move would only be 40p after that for an irregular.
I didn't catch what type unit it was - I am sorry for any confusion - I meant
the turn and what size block he ended in was possible. I should know better
than to try to answer such multipart questions quickly.

Got it :)
What I was getting at was the unit turning 90 degrees
eg column 8 elements deep turning 90 degrees thus reverting to a
block 2 elements wide 4 deep then moving full distance as an
irregular.
